Timely Shooting in Second Half Propels Fairmont State to 88-82 Victory

RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- #14 Fairmont State Men's Basketball used clutch shooting down the stretch to capture the 88-82 victory over Felician University on Friday evening.

The Fighting Falcons are now 8-2 on the season as Felician falls to 5-4 on the year.

George Mangas got Fairmont State on the board at the 17:53 mark off a jumper to make the score 4-2 in favor of the Golden Falcons. Zyon Dobbs collected a basket to tie the contest at 10 with 13:06 left to play in the first half.

Felician rallied to build a five-point lead over the Falcons before Isaiah Sanders finished up a fastbreak dunk to start an 8-0 run for Fairmont State as the Fighting Falcons led 22-19 with 5:48 remaining in the first half.

The two teams would go back-and-forth in trading baskets as Sanders finished a layup to give the Fighting Falcons a four-point cushion, 32-28, at the 1:38 mark. Mangas regained a one-point margin for Fairmont State at 34-33 as the two sides headed to halftime break.

Out of the break, Sanders knocked down a three-pointer for the Falcons to grow the advantage to four points before Felician answered with nine straight points to have the five-point swing in their favor. Parris drained a three at 17:05 in the second half to stop the run but the Golden Falcons responded on their next offensive possession with a triple.

The Falcons once again cut into Felician's lead before Mangas laid in a bucket to give Fairmont State the 49-48 margin with 14:19 to play in regulation. The Golden Falcons once again went an 8-0 to push the lead back to six points, but Dobbs trimmed the lead to three with a beyond the arc basket.

Fairmont State retook the lead with two made free throws from Sanders and would not relinquish the advantage back to Felician as timely shots and defensive stops proved key down the stretch for the Falcons.  Vonhandorf pushed the margin back to four points off a three-pointer at the 3:18 mark as the Golden Falcons would not get within four points of Fairmont State the rest of the way. The Fighting Falcons finished strong to pick up the 88-82 win over Felician inside Job Gymnasium on Friday evening.

The Falcons shot 48.4% (30-62) from the floor while knocking down seven three-pointers and being an efficient 21-24 from the charity stripe. Felician collected 34 made baskets out of 77 attempts (44.2%) and were only 7-9 from the free-throw line. Fairmont State held the advantages in fast break points (16-6), second chance points (13-9) and bench points (9-2) over the Golden Falcons.

Four Falcons were in double-digits for scoring as VonHandorf collected a season-high 22 points to lead Fairmont State. Seth Younkin played a huge role on the glass with 17 rebounds and 2-2 from the field.
