FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State Women's Basketball shot an impressive 56.4% from the field as they grabbed the 119-77 win over Salem University in a non-conference matchup today inside Joe Retton Arena. Six Fighting Falcons scored in double-figures as
Sierra Kotchman collected 27 points on 9-12 shooting.
The Tigers won the opening tip as Salem's Ixsamar Gonzalez opened the first quarter with a made layup to give SU the 2-0 advantage. Fairmont State quickly gained the lead as
Kamrin Weimer knocked in first three-pointer in the contest as the Fighting Falcons did not let go of the lead after the made basket from Weimer.
Alyssa DeAngelo hit a three-pointer at the 4:05 mark in the first quarter to double the margin at 22-11 for the Falcons and
Sierra Kotchman added a three to push the lead to 14 points.
Jalen Gibbs closed the 11-0 run for Fairmont State with a free throw make as the Falcons surged ahead 26-11 with 2:46 left in the opening period.
In the second quarter, the Fighting Falcons added to their lead as
Jertaya Hall scored a basket to give Fairmont State the 20-point cushion with 3:30 left in the half. The Falcons went into halftime up 68-43 with
Aaliyah Brunny collecting two points with 16 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
Out of the break, Fairmont State shot 50.0% in the third quarter to increase the margin over Salem to 35 points as the Falcons ended the contest with the 119-77 victory against the Tigers.
Kotchman paced the Falcons with 27 points as
Jalen Gibbs (16), DeAngelo (15), Brunny (14),
Jertaya Hall (13), and
Katy Darnell (11) joined Kotchman in double-figures. Darnell also collected a double-double in the game with 11 rebounds to go along with 11 points.The Falcons held the Tigers in check as Salem went 32-82 from the floor (39.0%) and Salem only made three three-pointers out of 22 attempts.
