FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- On Sunday afternoon, Fairmont State Women's Basketball hosted Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference member Slippery Rock University inside Joe Retton Arena as SRU picked up the 86-84 victory in double overtime.
Alyssa DeAngelo led the Fighting Falcons with 26 points as she went 13-13 from the free-throw line on the day.
The Fighting Falcons are now 7-4 on the season and Slippery Rock improves to 8-3 on the year.
Sierra Kotchman got Fairmont State on the board early with a three-pointer after the Falcons won the opening tip-off as the two teams traded baskets through the first quarter.
Madeline Huffman earned two points off a layup to give the Falcons the 15-11 advantage with 2:02 remaining in the opening period. SRU tied the score at 15 before the first quarter ended inside Joe Retton Arena.
In the second quarter, Slippery Rock's Jamiyah Johnson collected two points and gave the two-point margin to The Rock before Fairmont State answered with five quick points after a three from Huffman.
Kamrin Weimer doubled the Falcon lead to six off a triple at the 5:54 mark as the Falcons went into halftime up 39-26.
Out of the halftime break, Slippery Rock used a 9-0 run to cut the advantage to one point for Fairmont State, but
Alyssa DeAngelo and Kotchman ended the third with back-to-back jumpers to push the margin back to five points at 50-45.
In the final quarter of regulation, Kotchman capitalized on another three-pointer to push the Falcons in front,55-47, of Slippery Rock.
Jalen Gibbs added two more points to the ten-point lead, but SRU quickly erased the advantage and knotted the score at 63 off a made basket from Jamiyah Johnson. DeAngelo made two free throws on the ensuing offensive possession for Fairmont State, but Johnson of Slippery Rock sent the game to the first overtime off a made basket with 13 seconds left in regulation.
Fairmont State and Slippery Rock traded leads in the first overtime before Johnson added another basket to her game totals as SRU grabbed the 75-73 advantage with 22 seconds to play in the first overtime. DeAngelo came up big once more as she followed up her own miss with a layup to send the game to double overtime.
The second overtime looked like the first as Kotchman knocked in a three-pointer to open the five-minute period, but Slippery Rock continued to chip away at the lead and regained the lead at 81-80 after a layup from Deja Quick. DeAngelo retook the lead for the Falcons at 82-81 after two makes from the charity stripe. Johnson and Slippery Rock battled to take the lead once more at 84-82 with two made free throws of her own. DeAngelo collected her career best 26 points to tie the score at 84. On SRU's final possession, Jamiyah Johnson was fouled and finished the fixture with two made free throws to give The Rock the 86-84 win on Sunday afternoon.
Fairmont State went 26-69 (37.7%) from the floor and made eight three-pointers on the afternoon. The Falcons also finished 26-34 from the free-throw line. Kotchman joined DeAngelo with 20 points on 7-21 from the floor and
Jalen Gibbs rounded out the Falcons in double-figures with 10 points and added 12 rebounds for a double-double.
Slippery Rock shot 40.2% (35-87) from the field as SRU outrebounded the Falcons, 56-42, and held advantages in points in the paint (56-32), points off turnovers (21-16), second chance points (19-11), and fast break points (14-5). SRU's Johnson ended the afternoon with 26 points and 23 rebounds as Quick joined her with a game-high 27 points.
Fairmont State Women's Basketball (7-4, 5-1 MEC) returns to Mountain East Conference play on Wednesday, January 5th when the Falcons head to Alderson Broaddus (5-4, 3-3 MEC) for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
