PHILIPPI, W.Va. -- Fairmont State Women's Basketball improved their season record to 8-4 and 6-1 in Mountain East Conference after a commanding 96-76 win over Alderson Broaddus.
The Battlers jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead after a fast break layup from Iyahnna Williams with 6:20 remaining in the first period.
Jertaya Hall made a layup on a fastbreak of her own to cut margin to three points at the 2:57 mark.
Sierra Kotchman knocked in a jumper to send the first quarter to zeroes as the Falcons trailed 20-17 inside Rex Pyles Arena.
In the second quarter, Fairmont State picked up their offensive momentum as the Falcons went on an 8-0 run to start the period. Kotchman collected another basket via layup at the 7:06 mark to give Fairmont the 31-23 advantage. AB cut the lead in half, but Fairmont State would build their lead back to eight and went into halftime up 46-35.
Alderson Broaddus started the second half with three made baskets to trim the Falcon advantage down to four, but a jumper from
Madeline Huffman stopped the Battler run. Alexis Kuhlman registered two points inside the paint and Nyshae' Weaver of AB knotted the score at 56 apiece with 3:35 remaining in the third. Fairmont State answered with two points from
Jalen Gibbs and
Kamrin Weimer kicked in a three-pointer to push the Falcons back to 63-58. Fairmont State took the 69-62 lead into the final quarter of play.
In the fourth stanza, Fairmont State overpowered AB as they outscored the Battlers 27-14 in the final period.
Katy Darnell earned a basket to build the Falcon lead to 14 points and added another layup to give Fairmont State the 89-71 margin. The Fighting Falcons finished strong in the fourth quarter to earn the 96-76 on Wednesday night.
Six Falcons scored in double-figures on the night as
Alyssa DeAngelo paced Fairmont State with 22 points on 7-16 shooting as she was a perfect 7-7 from the free throw line.
Katy Darnell (17 points),
Jalen Gibbs (13 points), Huffman (12 points),
Jertaya Hall (12 points), and
Sierra Kotchman (10 points) joined DeAngelo in double-digit scoring on the night. As a team, Fairmont State shot 50.0% (36-72) from the field and were an efficient 22-25 from the charity stripe.
The Fighting Falcons held the advantage inside with 54 points in the paint and earned 33 points off 20 Battler turnovers.
Fairmont State (8-4, 6-1 MEC) heads to West Liberty (10-5, 5-4) on Saturday afternoon to face the Hilltoppers for a 2 p.m. tip.
