WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. -- Fairmont State Women's Basketball fell on Saturday afternoon, 92-76, to the Hilltoppers of West Liberty despite 28 points from
Sierra Kotchman.
Jalen Gibbs also had a strong effort with a double-double grabbing 20 points to go along with 10 rebounds.
The Fighting Falcons are now 8-5 on the season and 6-2 in Mountain East Conference play. The Hilltoppers improve to 11-5 on the year and 7-4 in MEC action.
Kotchman knocked in her a jumper to put the Falcons up 6-4 early in the first quarter, but West Liberty answered with a 13-0 run and regained the 17-6 lead in the affair. WLU extended the lead to 13 points after a made three-pointer from Hilltopper Corinne Thomas at the end of the quarter.
Five quick points to start the second stanza for the Falcons cut into West Liberty's double-digit lead, but the Hilltoppers did not allow Fairmont State within eight points of their lead the rest of the way. WLU went into the halftime break up 53-36 inside West Liberty's "ASRC".
Fairmont State scored 22 points to take the fourth quarter, but the Hilltoppers won 92-76 on Saturday afternoon.
The Falcons went 30-76 (39.5%) from the field as Kotchman earned 28 points on 10-26 shooting and collected seven rebounds and six assists. Gibbs followed Kotchman with 20 points on 9-11 from the floor and 10 boards.
Katy Darnell joined her teammates in double-figure points with 15.
West Liberty had all five starters score 10 or more points on the day with Audrey Tingle leading the way for the Hilltoppers with 22 points and 14 rebounds. WLU went 32-62 (51.6%) from the field and had 22 makes from the charity stripe.
Fairmont State Women's Basketball (8-5, 6-2 MEC) returns to Joe Retton Arena on Monday night to face the Notre Dame College Falcons (7-6, 6-2 MEC) at 6:00 p.m. in a rescheduled contest from January 8th.
