Late Scoring Run Helps Fairmont State Rally Past GSC

GLENVILLE, W.Va. -- No. 24-ranked Fairmont State shot 54 percent from the field and used a 20-2 scoring run late in the second half to take down Glenville State, 100-89, at the Waco Center on Friday afternoon.
 
With the win, Fairmont State improves to 11-4 both overall and in the Mountain East Conference. GSC returned from its COVID-pause and fell to 7-3 on the year.
 
With the Pioneers leading 75-66 following a trio of GSC threes at the 9:01 mark of the second half, Fairmont State took over with the 20-2 scoring run. The run spanned 5:57 and was paced by seven points from Cole VonHandorf and six from Isaiah Sanders.
 
During that stretch, GSC was just 1-of-12 from the field, 0-of-6 from three, and the Pioneers turned the ball over four times.
 
Following the run Fairmont State led 86-77 and maintained at least a six-point advantage for the rest of the afternoon.
 
In addition to shooting 54 percent from the field (33-of-61), the Falcons were also nearly 50 percent from three (11-24) and knocked down 23-of-27 attempts from the free throw line in the win. Fairmont State also had a 45-26 rebounding advantage.
 
GSC made 31 field goals in the loss, and 18 of them came from behind the arc. The Pioneers shot over 50 percent from the field in the first half, but cooled-off in the second half by shooting just 39 percent from the field (14-of-36).
 
Five players reached double-figures for the Falcons, including a team-high 28 points from Sanders following a 10-of-15 shooting performance (4-of-5 from three). The Falcons also got 19 points, seven rebounds and eight assists from Dale Bonner and 16 points from Cole VonHandorf. Seth Younkin returned to the lineup for the Falcons and recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Zyon Dobbs also came off the bench and scored 14 points to go with seven rebounds.
 
Glenville State had two 20-point scoring performances in the losing effort, including 31 points from John Williams. Williams made six 3-pointers and also pulled down nine rebounds. Hegel Augustin also chipped in 23 points for GSC.
 
Fairmont State will wrap up the regular season on Saturday at home against Frostburg State. The senior day matchup is set for a 4:30 p.m. tipoff at Joe Retton Arena.
