FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The seventh-ranked Fairmont State Acrobatics & Tumbling team outscored West Virginia Wesleyan in all but one heat and rolled to a season-opening win in Mountain East Conference action on Monday evening at Joe Retton Arena.
Â
In the one heat that Fairmont State did not hold an advantage in, the teams tied with a score of 9.35 in the compulsory pyramid.
Â
Monday's win gave first-year head coach
Danielle Cutri her first win as a NCATA head coach. Cutri took over the program this summer after serving as an assistant coach for the Falcons during the past five seasons.
Â
After a slow start in the compulsory event, Fairmont State scored a 9.50 or higher in five of the six heats in the acro and pyramid events to go into halftime with a 92.60-86.80 advantage. Fairmont's first half performance was highlighted by a 9.90 in the acro five-element, and a 9.70 in the open pyramid. Fairmont State also scored a 9.60 in the six-element acro and a 9.55 in the synchronized pyramid.
Â
The Falcons continued to add to their lead following each event in the second half and held over a 17-point advantage in the final three events combined. Fairmont State dominated the tumbling event thanks in large part to a trio of high scores in the individual passes.
Kathryn Koehl began the individual passes with a 9.20 in the aerial pass, before
Sophia Del Greco and
Alexis Smith posted back-to-back 9.70 scores in the six-element and open passes, respectively. Koehl and Smith also teamed up to score an 8.80 out of 9.40 in the duo pass to open the tumbling event.
Â
Fairmont State wrapped up its season-opening performance by outscoring Wesleyan 89.33-80.78 in team event to widen the final margin, 262.430-239.205.
Â
Fairmont State will remain at home to host Glenville State this Sunday. The meet is set to begin at 2 p.m. from Joe Retton Arena.
