Falcons Score 23 Runs During Sweep at Davis & Elkins

ELKINS, W.Va. -- Fairmont State lit up the scoreboard on Saturday afternoon with 23 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Davis & Elkins on the road. The Falcons took game one by a score of 10-7, before rolling to a 13-3 victory in the late game.
 
With the sweep, Fairmont State improves to 4-6 overall and 2-0 in MEC play. The Falcons have now won four of their last five games. D&E falls to 0-2 both overall and in the league.
 
Game 1
 
In game one, Fairmont State scored three runs in the second inning and four more in the fifth to build a lead that the Senators couldn't overcome. The Falcons had 15 hits in the game one victory and were also aided by a trio of D&E errors.
 
Zach Musgrove led the Falcons at the plate by going 2-of-5 with a home run, a double and a pair of RBIs. Jacob Goodnight and Tyler Haskins each recorded a team-high three hits apiece in the win, while also driving in two runs apiece. P.J. Lanham also drove in two runs for the Falcons.
 
In addition to Musgrove with two hits, Brycen Virgili and Justin Brown also recorded a pair of hits in the 10-7 win.
 
Michael Rotenberry improved to 2-1 on the season after picking up the win in game one of today's doubleheader. Rotenberry pitched four complete innings and allowed just three earned runs while also striking out six batters. Connor Cramer recorded the save for the Falcons after getting the final three outs of the win in the bottom of the seventh inning. Ben Taylor and Steven Ricketts also contributed to the pitching performance in game one.
 
Game 2
 
In game two, Fairmont State scored nine runs in the first inning and three more in the second inning and never looked back in the lopsided win. The Falcons scored 13 runs while recording just eight hits.
 
After the first four runs of the game being driven in by D&E walks, Nick Schroader, Brown, Goodnight and Musgrove each drove in first inning runs for the Falcons as FSU led 9-0 after just one inning of play. Brown drove in two runs on a triple, while Goodnight and Musgrove each drove in one run apiece on RBI doubles.
 
Six different players recorded hits for the Falcons in game two, including two apiece from Brown and Goodnight. Brown drove in a team-high three runs in the game.
 
Out of eight total hits in the game, four were extra-base hits for the Falcons. Noah Armstrong and Brown each hit triples, while Goodnight and Musgrove both doubled early in the game.
 
On the mound, Logan Smith improved to 1-1 on the season with the victory for Fairmont State. He pitched five innings in the game and allowed just three runs on six hits. He struck out seven batters on the afternoon. Brett Bobin pitched the final two innings for FSU, allowing just two hits and striking out three in the solid performance as a relief pitcher.

Tomorrow's scheduled doubleheader at West Virginia Wesleyan has been postponed due to COVID-19 protocols. The Falcons will now return to action on Saturday, March 27 against West Virginia State. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex.
