Fairmont State, Notre Dame Split

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State softball team split a pair of Mountain East Conference games against Notre Dame College on Saturday afternoon at Duvall-Rosier Field.
 
The Falcons took game one of the doubleheader with a 4-1 win in the early game. Notre Dame responded in game two with a 1-0 that was won on an unearned run in the top of the fourth inning.
 
Following the doubleheader, Fairmont State improves to 11-5 overall and 7-5 in the Mountain East Conference. NDC is now .500 on the season with a 10-10 overall record (7-5 MEC).
 
Emily Riggs put the Falcons on the board first in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI double to center field to score Hannah Workman for the first run of the game. Later in the inning, Andie Baughman hit an RBI single to bring home Riggs.
 
Notre Dame's Taylor Olson made it 2-1 in the top of the fourth on an RBI single.
 
With two runners on in the bottom of the fourth, Fairmont State's Jessie Weaver hit a two-run RBI double to bring home Courtney Moyer and Abbey Ammons.
 
Weave led the Falcons at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance with a pair of RBIs. One of her hits was a double. Workman and Riggs also recorded doubles for the Falcons.
 
In the circle, Cierra Chastain pitched a complete game, allowing just one run on four hits. The senior also recorded seven strikeouts and didn't surrender a walk in the game.
 
Game two was a pitching duel with the teams combining for just one run and 12 hits (both teams had six hits) in the game.
 
The lone run of the game was scored in the top of the fourth inning when Olson reached on a fielders' choice and brought home Alexis Maciejowski for the game-clinching run.
 
The Falcons left six runners on base during the game, including three runners that were in scoring position on second or third base.
 
Molly Schweitzer led the Falcons at the plate in game two with a 2-for-3 performance. Five other players recorded one hit each.
 
Kadi Cosgrove turned in a strong pitching performance for the Falcons by allowing just one run on six hits, and striking out four.
 
Fairmont State's Sunday doubleheader against Alderson Broaddus has been postponed until Monday afternoon in Philippi. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
