Wheeling Edges Fairmont State Twice

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Wheeling University edged Fairmont State in a pair of close battles on Friday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action at Duvall-Rosier Field. The Cardinals outlasted the Falcons, 4-3, in extra innings in game one, before holding the Falcons off the scoreboard with a 2-0 win in game two.

With Wheeling leading 1-0 in the third inning of game one, Haley McDaniel hit an RBI single that allowed Meadow Anderson to score from third. Later in the third inning, Courtney Worcester gave the Falcons their first lead of the day on an RBI single that plated Carlie Schlosser.

Brooke Slomkowski tied the game, 2-2, in the top of the sixth on an RBI single - eventually sending the game into extra innings.

In the top of the eight, Wheeling's Slomkowski hit an RBI single and Gina Fogle drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to put the Cardinals in front by two.

Wheeling walked home Emily Riggs with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eight, but WU pitcher Jamie Anderson was able to hold on to the Cardinal win by forcing a fielder's choice groundout during the next at-bat to end the game.

McDaniel and Molly Schweitzer each went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Falcons in game two.

Cierra Chastain made the start and went five complete innings for the Falcons, allowing just one run on four hits and recording a strikeout. Caitlyn Kassay (2-1) pitched the final three innings and suffered the loss as Wheeling picked up the win in extras. Kassay allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits. She also had a strikeout.

Jamie Anderson (2-3) pitched all eight innings for Wheeling to earn the win. She recorded four K's.

Game two was a pitching battle that saw very little success at the plate.

Wheeling grabbed an early lead in the game when Maddie Munoz got caught in a rundown that allowed Taylor Hradek to steal home for the 1-0 Cardinal lead. Wheeling scored its second run in the top of the sixth when an overthrow from catcher to third base allowed Cassi Roman to score an unearned run. That run wrapped up the scoring and gave the Cardinals the 2-0 win.

The teams combined for 13 hits in game two, with seven coming from Wheeling and six from Fairmont State. Nine of the 13 hits in the game were singles.

Hannah Tolle went 2-for-3 in the game, while Anderson went 2-for-2 with a double. Hannah Workman and Jessie Weaver also recorded hits for the Falcons.

Kadi Cosgrove (2-2) went seven complete innings for the Falcons in the circle, allowing just two runs (one earned) on seven hits. Cosgrove also struck out three batters.

Madison Macy (2-1) picked up the pitching win for WU in game two, pitching seven scoreless innings and scattering six hits. She also recorded three strikeouts.

Fairmont State will return to action on Wednesday evening at Frostburg State. It will be the first road game of the season for the Falcons. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
