WHEELING, W.Va. -- Fairmont State softball surpassed 20 wins on the season with a doubleheader sweep against Wheeling University on Sunday afternoon at the JB Chambers Complex in Wheeling.

Fairmont State (21-11, 17-11 MEC) held on for a 2-1 win over the Cardinals in game one, before earning the 3-0 shutout victory in game two for the sweep. Wheeling falls to 9-31 overall and 6-22 in league play following the setbacks.

Game 1
Â
Fairmont State grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game one when
Courtney Moyer hit a solo home run during the second at-bat of the day for the Falcons. Moyer also brought home Fairmont's second run of the day in the top of the third on an RBI single to center field that brought home
Isabella Yelle from third. Yelle got on base with a leadoff double in the inning, and was moved over to third on a groundout by
Hannah Workman.

Wheeling's Cassie Feyh prevented the shutout by putting the Cardinals on the scoreboard with a home run to right field in the bottom of the seventh. However,
Cierra Chastain forced the next three Wheeling batters into a pair of groundouts and a pop-out to end the game.

Chastain (8-5) had a solid pitching outing for the Falcons, finishing the game by allowing just one run on four hits. She also struck out five batters.

The Falcons held a 5-4 advantage in total hits during the victory.

Game 2
Â
In game two, Fairmont State broke a scoreless tie in the top of the seventh inning to pick up the 3-0 win.

With the game scoreless through six innings,
Emily Riggs finally put a run on the scoreboard on an RBI single in the seventh inning that scored
Torrie Gall. Then,
Brianna McKenzie took off from third and scored during a Wheeling throw from right field to second base on Riggs' advance to second.

With Fairmont State leading 2-0, Moyer put the final run of the game on the board on an RBI single though the right side that scored Riggs from third.

Fairmont State held a 9-5 advantage in total hits during game two, including a double from
Andie Baughman and Gall. Baughman also hit a double earlier in the day during game one.

Riggs and Gall led the Falcons at the plate in game two by going 2-for-3 in the game.

Caitlyn Kassay (5-2) picked up the victory for the Falcons in the circle, allowing just five hits in the shutout. She also recorded six strikeouts in the win.

Fairmont State will return to action on Wednesday afternoon at Slippery Rock for a non-conference doubleheader. Game times are set for 3 and 5 p.m.
