ATHENS, W.Va. – The Fairmont State baseball team suffered a pair of setbacks at Concord University on Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference baseball action in Athens.
In game one, the Falcons dropped a 6-4 final score in extra innings, before falling 12-3 in game two later in the afternoon.
Game one of the doubleheader was tied 2-2 after seven innings of play to send the game into extra innings. P.J. Lanham plated both runs for the Falcons in the fifth inning on a two-RBI single through the left side to allow
Justin Brown and
Chris Green to score from second and third.
In extra innings,
Zach Musgrove drove home a run in the top of the eighth on an RBI double to right field.
Jarrod Jones plated the second FSU run in the top of the eight on a fielder's choice groundout that brought home Musgrove.
However, in the bottom of the eight with the bases loaded, Concord's Richard
Ortiz hit a walk-off grand slam to give the Mountain Lions their first win of the day.
Brown and Lanham led the Falcons at the plate in game one, both going 2-for-4. Brown, Lanham and Musgrove both hit doubles in game one for the Falcons.
Michael Rotenberry had a solid pitching outing for the Falcons, pitching six complete innings and allowing just two runs (one earned) on four hits. Rotenberry also struck out six.
Steven Ricketts pitched the final two innings for the Falcons and suffered the loss on the mound.
In game two, Concord broke open a 3-3 tie with nine unanswered runs in the final four innings of the game to win 12-3.
Brown provided the first two runs of the game for the Falcons in the top of the second on a two-RBI double to left field. Spencer DeLawder added the third FSU run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly to center field. Jones was in scoring position for the Falcons and scored on the sacrifice fly.
The Falcons were limited to just four hits in game two, including only one extra-base hit. Fairmont State outhit Concord in game one of the doubleheader by an eight-to-seven margin.
Concord had 13 hits in game two, including a second home run from Ortiz.
Fairmont State will return to action next Saturday at Wheeling University. The four-game series will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday.
