FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Fairmont State women's soccer scored three second-half goals on Monday evening and rolled to a 4-1 Mountain East Conference win over West Liberty at Duvall-Rosier Field.
The win snapped a stretch of three-consecutive scoreless draws for the Falcons and helped Fairmont State improve to 2-0-3 on the season. WLU fell to 1-2-2 following the setback. The two teams also played earlier this season back on March 5, a game that ended in a 0-0 draw.
West Liberty struck first in the 17
th minute when Kaelyn Oskin forced a turnover in the Fairmont State zone and drove past a Fairmont State defender for the first score of the game.
The Falcons quickly responded, though, as
Jessica Schneider used a nice lead pass from
Mackenzie Gillispie to break away down the right side of the field and beat West Liberty's goalkeeper for the game-tying goal.
The score remained the same until the 75
th minute when Schneider found fellow freshman
Gracie Smith for her first career goal. It was the first of two assists for Schneider in the game.
Less than four minutes later,
Kiera Kuzinski came up with a steal deep in Fairmont's offensive end and gave the Falcons a 3-1 advantage following an unassisted goal.
Fairmont State added one more goal in the 89
th minute when
Emma Delk scored on a header that was set up by Schneider's corner kick late in the contest.
Fairmont State doubled West Liberty in total shots by an 18-9 margin, including a 13-6 edge in shots on goal.
Taylor Kennedy recorded her 15
th career victory in the Fairmont State goal after allowing just one goal and recording five saves.
Fairmont State will return to action on Friday evening at Wheeling University. Start time is set for 4:30 p.m.
