The Matchup

• Fairmont State will open the 2021 football season with a non-conference matchup against California (PA) out of the PSAC. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Duvall-Rosier Field.

• The game will be broadcasted live on SKY 106.5 FM with the voice of the Fighting Falcons Travis Jones on the call. Fans can also watch live video and follow live stats of the game via fightingfalcons.com.

• Cal (PA) holds a 24-10-4 series lead between the two teams (series dating back to 1916). Cal (PA) won the last meeting in the series back in 2006 – a 26-9 win. In fact, Cal has won seven-straight in the series, with Fairmont State's last win coming back in 1999 (51-49, 3OT)

• Fairmont State is 3-4 in season openers under head coach Jason Woodman, including just a 1-4 mark at Duvall-Rosier Field.

• Fairmont State's last non-conference matchup came back in 2018 – a 34-19 road win over Stonehill College.

• Fairmont State and Cal (PA) will step on the field for the first time since November 2019 (due to COVID-19 pandemic). Fairmont State finished the 2019 season with four-straight victories and wrapped up the year with a 5-5 overall record. During the four-straight wins, the Falcons outscored opponents 164-54.

• In 2019, Fairmont State scored 30-points or more nine times during the 10-game campaign. The Falcons also eclipsed 50 points twice and surpassed 40 points twice.

• Cal (PA) went 7-4 in 2019, with a 5-2 conference record and 4-1 mark in home games. Three of Cal's four losses in 2019 came by a combined 11 points (each was a single-digit scoring margin).

• In 2008, Fairmont State head coach Jason Woodman served as running backs coach for the Vulcans, as Cal won the PSAC Championship and made a trip to the national semifinals that season.

Notables

• In 2019, the Falcons turned in a 5-5 record after ending the year with four-straight victories to clinch its fifth-consecutive non-losing season, a feat that hadn't been accomplished at Fairmont State since the mid-80's (1984-88). Four of Fairmont State's five losses during the 2019 season came by seven-points or less.

 • From 2015-18, head coach Jason Woodman led the Falcons to four-consecutive winning seasons and finished no worse than third in the MEC standings during the stretch. In fact, the team recorded four-consecutive winning seasons for the first time since 1985-to-1988 under head coach Wally Hood.

• In addition, the Fairmont State football program has recorded eight-or-more wins in a season just six times since 1979 - including three seasons under Woodman from 2016-18.

• Fairmont State returns just one of its 12 All-MEC players from 2019. Wide receiver Javon Hayes earned third-team All-Super Region 1 honors from Don Hansen Gazette in 2019, in addition to adding second team All-MEC accolades.

 • Hayes returns after hauling in 49 catches for 916 yards and eight touchdowns in 2019. Isiah Smith, Michael Nuzum, Shawn Harris, Donte Cloude and Josh Nevers return in the passing game from Fairmont's 2019 roster.

• Chrinovic Mukulu returns to lead Fairmont State's defense after finishing second on the team in tackles (42) and sacks (7.0) during the 2019 season. Danny Anige also returns after finishing seventh on the team in tackles with 27 back in 2019.

• Fairmont State place-kicker Colin Harvath also returns for his final season in Fairmont during the 2021 season. Harvath finished the 2019 season going 6-of-7 on field goals with a long of 42 yards. Harvath has 17 career field goals at Fairmont State. He needs just four more to reach the top-5 in school history.

Scouting The Cal Vulcans

• Cal (PA) was picked to finish third in the PSAC West preseason poll. Each of Cal U's losses in 2019 came against NCAA Division II playoff teams – three of which came on the road.

• Despite the year off, Cal returns quarterback Noah Mitchell, who completed 196-355 passes for 2,464 yards and 25 touchdowns in 2019. Tyson Hill is his top returning receiver, who hauled in 54 receptions for 912 yards and 7 TDs in 2019.

• Gerald Brown returns in 2021 to lead the Cal U defense. Brown finished the 2019 season with 66 total tackles, including 16.5 tackles for loss. Noah Dillow also returns in 2021 after recording 59 tackles in '19. Brown was chosen as a preseason second-team All-American by Lindy's Sports over the summer.

• Cal U is 13-3 in week one dating back to the 2004 campaign.
