#14 Fairmont State Pushes Win-Streak to Seven on Wednesday Night

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- #14 Fairmont State Men's Basketball handed the Senators of Davis & Elkins a 93-62 defeat on Wednesday night inside Joe Retton Arena. 

The Fighting Falcons are now 14-2 on the season and 9-2 in Mountain East Conference contests with D&E at 5-9 and 3-7 in conference play.

Cole VonHandorf got the scoring going for Fairmont State with a three-pointer to open the first half as Davis & Elkins took their first lead of the game at 5-3 with 18:39 to play after a three from Senator Charleston Ponds. The Falcons regained the advantage at 9-7 after a jumper by Isaiah Sanders as Fairmont State pushed the margin to 10 points with 8:13 left in the first half after a slam dunk from Seth Younkin. Fairmont State went on a 19-1 run to up their lead to 41-20. Davis & Elkins finally stopped their scoring drought with a three from Ponds at the 2:29 mark of the first half. The Falcons went into the halftime break sporting a 47-28 lead after a layup made by George Mangas.

The second half belonged to Fairmont State as well as Mangas started the period with a layup with 18:50 remaining. In the span of two minutes and nine seconds, Briggs Parris jumped the Falcon lead to 34 points after four consecutive three-pointers. Parris showed up again as collected another one from beyond the arc at the 6:48 mark with Fairmont State up 80-43. Parris finished the night with a season-high six three-pointers on the night. The Falcons capped the win off a fastbreak layup by Brendan Paul via an assist from Kyle Whippen to give the final score of 93-62 on Dan Cava Court.

Parris paced the Falcons with 27 points on 9-15 from the floor and was 3-3 from the charity stripe also. VonHandorf followed with 17 points on an efficient 6-10 shooting as Isaiah Sanders and Mangas rounded out the Falcons in double-figures with 12 points apiece. Sanders has scored 10+ points in 46 consecutive contests in his Fairmont State career with the first game on February 8th, 2020 against Concord. Younkin had a workman-like game with nine points and 13 rebounds in 30 minutes of action. 

As a team, Fairmont State shot 47.8% (32-67) from the field and had eight three-pointers with 21 makes at the free-throw line. The Falcons also added 19 assists on those 32 made baskets and outrebounded the Senators 46-34 with 11 offensive rebounds.

For Davis & Elkins, Ponds led the way with 19 points as Cortney Walton finished with 16 points on Wednesday night. The Senators would be held in check throughout the evening as they shot at a 32.8% (21-64) rate.

#14 Fairmont State (14-2, 9-2 MEC) is back inside Joe Retton Arena on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. when the Falcons host Frostburg State (6-11, 4-7 MEC).
