VonHandorf Ties Career-High with 28 Points in 97-89 Victory over Frostburg State

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Cole VonHandorf scored a season-best 28 points in the 97-89 win over Frostburg State on Saturday night. The Fighting Falcons extend their win streak to eight games straight with six coming in Mountain East Conference action.

VonHandorf got the scoring underway for the Falcons as he knocked in a layup at the 19:43 mark to give Fairmont State the 2-0 margin. Frostburg State answered quickly with seven points to go up 7-2, VonHandorf started a 9-0 run for the Falcons to give Fairmont the 11-7 advantage with 16:19 remaining in the first. The two squads battled with the lead multiple times as VonHandorf came up clutch once again to push the lead to seven in favor of Fairmont State at 41-34 with 4:01 left in the half. The Bobcats trimmed the margin back down to two after a jumper from Bo Schene with 29 seconds on the clock prior to the half. Fairmont State held the slim margin, 45-43, inside Joe Retton Arena at the halftime break.

Out of the halftime break, George Mangas earned a fastbreak layup via a pass from VonHandorf to give Fairmont State a nine-point cushion with 17:25 to play in the second half. Frostburg State continued to cut away at the margin as Agyei Edwards buried a three-pointer at the 11:59 mark to only trail by two points. Isaiah Sanders used a critical dunk with 9:29 remaining in regulation to give Fairmont State back the four-point as the Falcons built the margin back to nine points with free throw makes from Mangas and Zyon Dobbs. Briggs Parris made a huge three-pointer at the 5:14 mark to give the Falcons a nine-point lead once more and drained another one from deep to elevate the margin to 12 points with 3:54 to play. Fairmont State continued the strong play down the stretch of the contest and earned their eighth straight game of the season with the final score of 97-89 over Frostburg State.

VonHandorf had 28 points on 12-19 shooting from the floor and four rebounds. Dobbs collected 20 points on 6-13 shooting from the field and reeled in four assists to go along with five rebounds. Seth Younkin proved big once more with a double-double with 17 points and 17 rebounds on the night. Sanders (13 points) and Parris (11 points) rounded out the Fairmont State players in double-digit scoring.

For Frostburg State, Edwards paced the Bobcats with 23 points and had four three-pointers on the contest with Canaan Bartley (22 points) and Jaylon Johnson (13 points) joining Edwards in double-figures on the evening. The Bobcats were efficient from the field going 33-64 (51.6%) and making 11 three-pointers in the game.

The Falcons held the commanding advantage in the paint with 50 points in the paint to Frostburg's 24 and had 15 second-chance points on the evening.

#14 Fairmont State Men's Basketball (15-2, 10-2 MEC) heads to Institute on Wednesday, January 26th for a matchup with West Virginia State (13-5, 8-3 MEC) at 7:30 p.m.
