INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- #7 Fairmont State traveled to West Virginia State tonight in a Mountain East Conference matchup as the Yellow Jackets knocked off the Fighting Falcons, 95-84.
The Falcons are now 15-3 on the season and 8-3 in MEC play while WVSU improves to 14-5 and 9-3 in conference action.
Isaiah Sanders led Fairmont State on Wednesday evening with 24 points and seven rebounds as
Briggs Parris followed with 20 points.
Seth Younkin added another double-double to his season totals with 17 points, season-high, and 11 boards.
Zyon Dobbs tallied nine points and
Cole VonHandorf chipped in eight points in 40 minutes. The Falcons went 47% (31-66) from the field and went 13-19 from the free-throw line.
Fairmont State got on the board to even the score at two apiece after a layup from Younkin via an assist from
George Mangas. West Virginia State pushed their lead to 12-9, but Parris answered with a three-pointer of his own off an assist from Dobbs. WVSU went on a 9-0 run to push their advantage to 23-14 with 11:04 remaining in the first half. The Falcons answered once more to knot the score at 32 each after another three-pointer from Parris and Fairmont State gained the 38-35 margin after a beyond-the-arc jumper from VonHandorf at the 3:39 mark of the first half. Sanders added two more points prior to the halftime break to put the Falcons up 45-42 after 20 minutes of play.
In the second half, Yellow Jacket Noah Jordan collected a layup to tie the score at 48 apiece and WVSU grabbed the lead again at 50-48 via free throw makes from Jeremiah Moore. The Yellow Jackets capped a 14-0 run to start the second half with a layup from Jeremiah Moore to put WVSU up 58-48. Parris got the Falcons within four points after a three-pointer at the 5:54 mark, but the Yellow Jackets closed the door to earn the 94-85 victory inside the Walker Convocation Center on Wednesday evening.
Anthony Pittman paced all scorers with a season-high 33 points on the night for West Virginia State as Moore followed with 19 points on 8-12 from the floor. Noah Jordan (18 points) was a perfect 7-7 from the field and Glen Abram, 11 points, rounded out the Yellow Jackets in double-figures. As a team, WVSU shot 36-67 (53.7%) from the field with 11 three-point makes. West Virginia State held the advantage in second-chance points, 22-15, and fast break points, 11-7, in the contest.
#7 Fairmont State (15-3, 10-3 MEC) returns to Joe Retton Arena on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. when the Falcons host the University of Charleston (14-3, 10-2 MEC) in a crucial MEC contest.
