FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State Women's Basketball fell in an overtime thriller to the University of Charleston, 81-77, inside Joe Retton Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Kamrin Weimer notched 1,000
th career point in her collegiate career.
The Fighting Falcons are now 11-7 overall and 9-4 in Mountain East Conference action while the Golden Eagles improve to 10-6 on the season and 8-4 in MEC contests.
UC and Fairmont State traded baskets throughout the first quarter as
Sierra Kotchman collected a three-pointer to knot the score at 17 apiece with 2:50 remaining in the opening period. Charleston ended the first with a layup by Markyia McCormick to give the Golden Eagles the four-point edge heading into the second quarter.
The second quarter proved to be all Fairmont State as Kotchman continued her hot shooting from deep. The Falcons regained the lead at 33-32 after a made basket from
Madeline Huffman. Fairmont State extended their lead to nine points after a three from
Alyssa DeAngelo and added another three points via Weimer. The Falcons headed into the halftime break with the 48-38 advantage.
In the second half, UC cut the lead to five points at the 6:50 mark and trailed by only one point after a fastbreak layup with 3:20 to play in the third. Fairmont State added a layup from Kotchman and a free throw from
Katy Darnell to push the margin back to four points at the end of the third period.
In the last 10 minutes of regulation, the Falcons were held to seven total points in the quarter as Charleston regained the lead and held the five-point margin with 1:49 remaining. The Falcons answered with their remaining possessions in regulation as Kotchman tied the score at 66 with 23 seconds. Charleston's McCormick missed a three-pointer with three seconds remaining as the two teams headed to five more minutes of action.
Weimer started the five minutes of overtime with a three-pointer, but Charleston's Abby Lee tied the contest at 71 with a three-pointer of her own. UC staked out to the five-point lead once more as the Falcons used another one from deep from Kotchman to trim the advantage back down to one point with 28 seconds remaining. The Golden Eagles used timely free throws in the final 30 seconds of the contest to earn the 81-77 victory inside Joe Retton Arena.
Kotchman had a season-high 31 points to lead all scorers as she collected nine three-pointers on the afternoon. The nine three-point field goals made by Kotchman are a career-high for the Washington, Pa. native. DeAngelo poured in 18 points on 5-10 shooting as Weimer had 12 points on four three-point field goals.
For Charleston, McCormick paced the Golden has Eagles with 23 points as Sierra Davis (18 points), Abby Lee (15 points), and Anastasiia Zakharova (11 points) joined in to score in double-digits on the day.
Fairmont State Women's Basketball (11-7, 9-4 MEC) has a quick turnaround as the Falcons host Notre Dame College (7-11, 6-7 MEC) on Monday, January 31
st inside Joe Retton Arena. The contest is scheduled for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
