Institute, W. Va. — The 9-2-3 Fairmont State women's soccer team traveled to 14-0-1 West Virginia State University, where they battled to a 2-2 tie. West Virginia State is currently ranked in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 at No. 18 for this week. Both the Falcons and the Yellow Jackets are ranked regionally by the NCAA and the US Coaches Association.
Fairmont State had 14 shots on the night, with 4 being on goal. West Virginia State forced 22 total shots, and 10 were on goal.
The Falcons led the way with scoring, as junior forward Kiera Kuzinski found herself on a solo offensive drive. Kuzinski beat multiple West Virginia State players and finished calmly past the Yellow Jackets' goalkeeper. This put Fairmont State up 1-0 in the 34th minute.
The Yellow Jackets capitalized on a free kick just 2 minutes into the second half. Fairmont State continued to fight for another goal, but West Virginia State finished a chance in the 77th minute to make the score 2-1, in favor of the Yellow Jackets.
Fairmont State continued to send numbers forward to tie up the score. They were able to finish off a corner kick, taken by junior forward Jessica Schneider. The goal was a scramble in the box that sophomore midfielder Tricia Lemasters poked into the goal to even the score 2-2 in the 85th minute.
The Falcons defensive unit held strong against the strong West Virginia State attack. Senior goalkeeper Taylor Kennedy made 8 vital saves on the night.
The women's soccer team will head back south to take on University of Charleston on October 26, Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
