DeAngelo Leads Fairmont State to Victory over Davis & Elkins

ELKINS, W.Va. –Alyssa DeAngelo netted a career-high 34 points as Fairmont State women's basketball (3-0, 1-0 Mountain East Conference) collected its first MEC win of the season over Davis & Elkins (0-4, 0-1 MEC) on Saturday afternoon at the McDonnell Center.

DeAngelo drained nine triples and sank 11 out of 13 free throws from the charity stripe. She added five rebounds and an assist to her stat line in 37 minutes of work.

"At the beginning of the game my outside shot was really hitting," said DeAngelo. "In the second half, I was able to drive to the basket and get to the free throw line. All facets of my game were working the whole day."

DeAngelo sank her first shot beyond the arc at the 5:30 mark in the first half that put Fairmont State ahead by four points. With the score tied at 19, Madeline Huffman stole the ball and finished at the other end for a fastbreak layup. DeAngelo drilled a three and connected on a free throw to complete a six-point scoring spree for the Falcons. Fairmont State led by six after the first quarter.

Huffman scored three consecutive layups that extended the Fairmont State lead to 12 points in the second quarter. DeAngelo pushed the Falcons' lead to 18 points following her second three-point basket in the second frame. The Fairmont State lead grew to 19 points when DeAngelo swished her third triple in the second quarter. DeAngelo fired 13 points in the second quarter and the Falcons led by 16 at intermission.

The Senators trimmed the Fairmont State lead to 13 points in the opening minutes of the second half. Katy Darnell converted four free throws that bumped the FSU lead to 18 points. Aaliyah Brunny hit a three and DeAngelo scored her 25th point of the game that put the Falcons ahead 72-54 at the two-minute mark in the third quarter. The Senators closed the third quarter on a four-point scoring run and trailed the Falcons by 13 after three.

Fairmont State's free throw shooting sealed the Falcons' first conference win of the season. Darnell and DeAngelo combined to shoot 13-of-14 at the free-throw line in the final quarter of play. Davis & Elkins could not cut the deficit to below double-digits in the last quarter, and Fairmont State advanced its record to 3-0.
