Box Score PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- In their first game of the season, Fairmont State Baseball put up a seven-spot to earn the 13-7 comeback against The University of Alabama in Huntsville in the Peachtree City Baseball Classic. The win was also Head Baseball Coach
Matt Yurish's first victory at the head of the Fairmont State baseball program.
Alex Pane came in relief and threw a three and 1/3 innings pitch to collect the victory on the mound. Pane struck out three Chargers in the contest with the pitching staff only allowing two walks on the day.
UAH scored two runs in the top of the first, but
Logan Smith stopped the Chargers with a swinging strikeout and a fly out to left field.
The Fighting Falcons answered quickly in the bottom half of the first with
Jacob Goodnight leading off the inning with a double.
PJ Lanham singled a couple of at-bats to score Goodnight as the Falcons cut the lead in half 2-1.
In the bottom of third,
Vince Sabatino homered to right field to cut the Charger advantage back to 3-2. UAH regained their two-run advantage at 4-2 in the top of the fifth off an RBI groundout.Â
UAH tacked on two more runs in the top of sixth as Hunter sent one over the right-field wall to lead the Falcons 6-2. Fairmont State moved within three runs after a single by
Alex Tennant in the bottom half of the sixth inning scoring
Zachary Musgrove.
The bottom of the seventh proved critical as the Falcons plated seven runs.
Justin Brown started the inning with a walk as he scored on a wild pitch to make the contest 6-4 in favor of UAH.
Jacob Goodnight scored on a hit by pitch via Lanham to make the score 6-5 and Sabatino was plated on a hit by pitch via
Dwayne Thomas. The Falcons gained the 7-6 advantage off a fielder's choice by
Alex Tennant and opened the margin to four runs via two more hit by pitches and a walk drawn by Sabatino. In total, nine Falcon hitters reached in the inning by either a hit by a pitch or a walk by the Charger pitchers.
Fairmont State poured on three more runs in the bottom of the eighth as Brown singled to right field to score
Alex Tennant and Lanham.
Pane closed the door in the ninth on the Chargers as UAH mustered one more in the final half-inning.
Logan Smith got the start on the mound for the Fighting Falcons as he went five and two-thirds pitched with four earned runs, two strikeouts, and one walk. Goodnight, Sabatino,
Noah Canterbury, Lanham, and
Alex Tennant all scored two times in the game for Fairmont State.
Justin Brown drove home three runs with
Alex Tennant and Sabatino each picking up two RBIs in the contest. The Falcon hitters also drew nine total walks in the 13-7 comeback.
Fairmont State (1-0, 0-0 MEC) returns to the diamond in Peachtree City, Georgia at 12 p.m. when the Falcons face Great Midwest Athletic Conference opponent Cedarville University (1-0).
