FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State Women's Basketball never trailed in today's contest as the Fighting Falcons snapped a five-game losing streak on the season with the 90-81 victory over Alderson Broaddus.
Sierra Kotchman led all scorers with 25 points on the afternoon with an efficient 7-14 from the field and four three-pointers.
Katy Darnell followed with 16 points on 7-13 shooting as
Alyssa DeAngelo chipped in 15 points.
Madeline Huffman and
Jalen Gibbs each had 10 points in today's contest with Huffman dishing out a team-high six assists.
DeAngelo scored the first basket for the Falcons at the 8:49 mark of the first quarter and Kotchman drained a three on the next offensive possession for Fairmont State.
Kamrin Weimer knocked in a three with 2:59 remaining in the first to give the Falcons the 22-10 advantage on the scoreboard. AB cut the lead back down to eight after a three by Taylor Isaac.
In the second quarter, Fairmont State doubled up the Battlers, 36-18, with two free throws via Kotchman, but Alderson Broaddus answered with a 7-0 run to cut the deficit back to 11 points off a jumper by Cassandra Smith. The Falcons headed into the locker room with the 46-29 lead after 20 minutes of play.
The Battlers continued to chip away at the Falcon advantage as DeAngelo pushed the margin back to 13 points off a layup with 50 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Fairmont State stopped a fourth-quarter comeback by the Battlers as the Falcons earned their 12th win of the season and 10
th in Mountain East Conference play with the 89-81 triumph over AB.
As a team, Fairmont State shot 51.6% (33-64) from the field while being 17-26 (65.4%) from the charity stripe. The Falcons held the advantage inside the paint with 52 points in the paint to the Battlers' 42. Fairmont State held the decisive advantage in points off turnovers with 35 points on 30 turnovers by AB.
For Alderson Broaddus, Nyshae' Weaver scored 20 points in 28 minutes going 9-11 from the floor. Ariyah Douglas (15 points), Iyahnna Williams (14 points), Hannah Taylor (12 points) and Taylor Isaac (12 points) all scored in double-figures as well for the Battlers.
Fairmont State (12-11, 10-8 MEC) is back on the road on Wednesday night as the Falcons head to Wheeling University for a 5:30 p.m. with the Cardinals in the Alma Grace McDonough Center.
