Fairmont State Baseball Splits Sunday Doubleheader at Salem

NUTTER FORT, W.Va. -- On Sunday afternoon, Fairmont State Baseball traveled to Frank Loria Memorial Field to take the hosts Salem University in a twin bill. Salem took the front-end of the doubleheader, 3-2, and the Fighting Falcons notched a 10-1 victory in the second contest of the day.

GAME 1: Fairmont State 2, Salem 3

In the first game of the doubleheader, Fairmont State got on the board with a solo home run by Justin Brown to deep center field. Jacob Goodnight continued his five-game hit-streak with a single up the middle as the batting order flipper over. Goodnight advanced to second as Vince Sabatino was by the hit by pitch on his at-bat. Zachary Musgrove loaded the bases full of Falcons with a single as Noah Canterbury singled through the left side to score Goodnight. Salem's starting pitcher Jaryd Lund was able to get out of the third inning jam with a strikeout of PJ Lanham and a foul out to the first baseman by Dwayne Thomas.

Logan Smith had a quality start in his second outing of the season for Fairmont State as Smith went four innings giving up two hits and one walk to go along with three strikeouts.

Musgrove reached via a walk in the fifth inning as Canterbury singled to right field in his at-bat to have Falcons on first and second in the inning. Lanham walked to load the bases once more but Salem was able to keep the 2-0 margin after a strikeout of Thomas.

In the bottom half of the sixth inning, the Tigers tied the score at two apiece after a throwing error by pitcher Alex Pane. Pane got out of the inning as he notched a strikeout and ground out to second base to end the inning.

The seventh inning did not go the way for the Falcons as Salem's Luis Angarita singled to right field to walk off the game with an RBI.

GAME 2: Fairmont State 10, Salem 1

Fairmont State started the second game on fire as the Falcons plated five runs in the first inning. Canterbury continued his solid day at the plate with an RBI single that scored Goodnight. Lanham continued the station-to-station hitting with a single that would score Justin Brown and make the score 2-0 in favor of Fairmont State. Canterbury scored on a sacrifice fly by Dwayne Thomas as Tyler Haskins and Lanham scored on a throwing error by Salem's third baseman.

Salem's Graham hit a solo shot in the bottom of the first score bringing the score to 5-1 in favor of the Falcons.

In the sixth inning, Sabatino singled to center field that plated Ryan Goff and Sabatino made the score 7-1 off a sacrifice fly by Justin Brown. Goodnight advanced to third on a balk via Salem's pitcher and Goodnight touched home plate on a wild pitch by the Tiger relief arm.

In the seventh, Goff doubled down the left-field line to bring in two runs to give Fairmont State the 10-1 advantage.

Jacob Young closed the door on the Tigers as he went one inning while only allowing one Tiger to reach base via a walk.

Fairmont State starter Connor Cramer backed up a solid season debut last week with a gem on Sunday as went six strong innings with eight strikeouts and gave up zero walks. Cramer scattered five Tiger hits across six innings and only allowed an earned run on the solo home run by Graham. Cramer is now 2-0 on the season with a season earned-run average of 3.27.

Canterbury had six total hits with three each in the doubleheader today and added two RBIs to his freshman season and one walk. Goodnight had three hits in the two contests and one run scored. Justin Brown added his second home run of the season in the first game of the day and went 3-7 from the plate with two RBIs.
