ATHENS, W.Va. -- Fairmont State Women's Basketball traveled on Saturday afternoon to Concord University where the Mountain Lions defeated the Fighting Falcons 89-81 in Mountain East Conference play. Concord used an eight-point swing in the third quarter to earn its 15
th victory of the season.
Madeline Huffman got the Falcons off to a great start with a made jumper on their first possession of the game.
Kamrin Weimer hit a three-pointer to give Fairmont State the 7-0 margin with 7:26 left to play in the first quarter. Concord answered with four points of their own but 10 consecutive points from Fairmont State gave the 17-4 lead in favor of the Falcons. The Mountain Lions scored the last 10 of 12 points in the opening stanza to make the score 19-10 in favor of Fairmont State.
In the second quarter,
Sierra Kotchman made a shot from beyond the arc to give the Falcons the 14-point advantage with 5:40 left in the first half. Concord cut the lead to four but Kotchman answered once before heading into the locker room with Fairmont State leading 37-30.
The first five minutes of the second half proved vital for CU as the Mountain Lions gained the lead after an and-one opportunity from Jasiah Smith at the 6:22 mark of the third quarter.
Jertaya Hall knocked in a three-pointer 14 seconds later but Concord responded with a 12-0 to seize the 55-45 advantage. Kotchman stopped the run with another three-pointer with 2:10 remaining in the third quarter. The Falcons closed the quarter out nicely as
Jalen Gibbs got an opportunity at the line after a made basket to earn the three-point play. Fairmont State entered the final quarter trailing 59-58.
In the final 10 minutes of the contest, the lead changed hands or was tied 10 times as the Mountain Lions retook the advantage after a made layup from Ashton Funderburg. Funderburg added two free throw makes to extend CU's lead to 11 as Fairmont State fell on Saturday afternoon, 89-81.
Kotchman led all scorers on the day with 26 points on four three-pointers and was a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe.
Alyssa DeAngelo (17 points) and
Jalen Gibbs (13 points and 11 rebounds) joined Kotchman in double-digit scoring for the Falcons. Gibbs' strong play in the paint on Saturday afternoon gave her fourth double-double on the season.
For Concord, Riley Fitzwater anchored the team with a double-double of 23 points, and 15 boards. Jasiah Smith added 19 points with Alexis Phillips (16 points) and Maggie Guynn (11 points) rounding out the Mountain Lions with 10+ points on the afternoon.
Fairmont State (11-10, 9-7 MEC) remains on the road this Wednesday as they head to Notre Dame College for a 5:30 p.m. Last time out, NDC on January 31
