Women's Basketball Falls at Notre Dame, 71-64

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- Fairmont State Women's Basketball traveled to the campus of Notre Dame College on Wednesday evening where NDC picked up the 71-64 victory inside Murphy Gymnasium.

The Fighting Falcons are now 11-11 on the season and 9-8 in Mountain East Conference play. NDC is also 11-1 and improves to 10-7 in MEC action.

Sierra Kotchman and Alyssa DeAngelo led the Falcons with 13 points apiece as Katy Darnell and Jalen Gibbs each chipped in 10 points. Kamrin Weimer had nine pointers on 3-5 from the three-point range. As a team, Fairmont State shot 24-63 (39.3%) from the field with six three-pointers and tallied 10-13 from the free-throw line.

Notre Dame started quick out of the first quarter with a 7-0 before back-to-back buckets by Kotchman and Weimer to cut the lead back down to two points. NDC pushed the margin to eight points with 1:58 remaining in the first stanza as the Falcons had the 17-11 lead after the first ten minutes.

At the start of the second quarter, Weimer knocked in her second jumper from beyond the arc to slash the NDC advantage to three points. The Fighting Falcons tied the game at 23 apiece off a layup from Gibbs and Gibbs gained the two-point margin for the Falcons with two free throws on the next offensive possession. Notre Dame ended the half on a 5-0 run to retake the lead as Fairmont State headed into the halftime break trailing 33-29. 

Weimer drained her third three-pointer to start the scoring for the Fighting Falcons at the 9:33 mark of the third quarter. Fairmont State gained the 34-33 advantage via a fastbreak layup by DeAngelo. NDC answered with a 10-0 as the Falcons pushed the lead back to nine points in favor of the home side at 45-36. Fairmont State got within four points of NDC but a free throw make and a layup gave Notre Dame the 55-48 margin at the end of the third period.

In the fourth quarter, Fairmont State cut the lead down to four points off two free throws from DeAngelo, but Notre Dame earned the 71-64 victory inside Murphy Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

For Notre Dame, Alana Ellis paced the scorers with 21 points as Tamia Ridley proved crucial once again for the Falcons as she had 14 points with 17 total rebounds. NDC shot 48.3% (28-58) from the floor with seven three-pointers and 40 points inside the paint on the night.

Fairmont State Women's Basketball (11-11, 9-8 MEC) returns to Joe Retton Arena on Saturday afternoon when the Falcons host Alderson Broaddus (10-10, 8-9 MEC) at 2 p.m.
