FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State Softball used impressive pitching performances by
Caitlyn Kassay and
Shelby Reed in the doubleheader from Duvall-Rosier Field. The Fighting Falcons grabbed the 4-0 victory in the first game and finished off Gannon 2-0 in the nightcap of the twin bill.
Fairmont State improved to 4-6 on the season as the Golden Knights are now 5-7 on the season. The Falcons took two of three from Gannon as the Golden Knights claimed a 3-2 victory on February 28
th in Winter Haven, Fla.
GAME 1 (Fairmont State 4, Gannon 0)
Kassay dazzled in Fairmont State's home opener of the 2022 season as the junior right-handed pitcher threw a complete-game shutout. Kassay struck out five Golden Knights on the afternoon and only allowed three hits in the contest.
In the bottom of the third inning,
Hannah Workman led the inning off with a five-pitch walk.
Emily Riggs followed with a ground-rule double that advanced Workman to third. Gannon's starter was able to work around the inning with two groundouts and a strikeout that left Workman and Riggs stranded on the basepaths.
Riggs was not denied in the bottom of the fifth as she sent a ball over the left-field fence to give the Falcons the one-run advantage.
Molly Schweitzer worked a one-out walk as
Brooke Schmitt produced a single to the left side to plate
Jordan Novak and
Peyton Wetherholt.
Carlie Schlosser hit a sacrifice fly to left field and scored the fourth run of the inning.
Kassay dominated the final two innings as the junior compiled two more strikeouts in the top of the seventh to collect her first win of the season.
GAME 2 (Fairmont State 2, Gannon 0)
In the second game of the doubleheader, Reed followed with a dominant performance as well going the distance with a career-high nine strikeouts and scattered four hits. Reed is now 2-0 on the season and lowered her season ERA to 4.40.
The Falcons got on the board in the first inning as Workman singled on a two-strike count and advanced to third on a wild pitch by Gannon's pitcher. Riggs brought Workman home on a single through the left side in her at-bat.
In the top of the second, Reed worked around a one-out double by Gannon's Katie Sidare as she struck the next hitter and got a groundout to end the threat.
In the top of the fifth, Golden Knight Sidare led off with a double to left center, but Reed proved pivotal as left another Gannon runner stranded in scoring position.
Fairmont State added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Reed helped her cause with a single to right field.
Isabella Yelle reached on base via a fielder's choice as she scored on a double by
Elizabeth Waszkiewicz.
Gannon's Sidare doubled once more in the top of the seventh but was left stranded on second as Reed finished the inning with a strikeout and a flyball to left field.
Riggs finished the day with four total hits over the two games as Schlosser contributed two hits in game one. Schmitt tallied two RBIs on the first game on the day with Riggs having two RBIs in the two games.
Courtney Moyer and Workman drew two walks in the first game as well as the Falcons had a solid plate discipline in the two games with eight total walks.
Fairmont State (4-6, 0-0 MEC) opens Mountain East Conference play on Saturday, March 19
th when the Falcons take on West Virginia Wesleyan (9-5, 0-0 MEC) in Buckhannon. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
