BUCKHANNON. W.Va. -- Fairmont State Softball traveled to the campus of West Virginia Wesleyan on Friday afternoon to take on the Bobcats in their mutual Mountain East Conference opener on the day. The Bobcats took both games on the day by the scores of 6-2 and 7-1.
GAME 1 (Fairmont State 2, WVWC 6)
The Bobcats scored four runs in the bottom of the first to go ahead 4-0 against Fairmont State as Alli Robinson sent a grand slam over the fence.
Fairmont State got one run back in the fourth inning as
Emily Riggs singled to center field and brought home
Hannah Workman to begin the inning.
WWWC answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the 6-1 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Workman hit a two-out single to center field that plated
Peyton Wetherholt as the Falcons fell 6-2 in the first contest.
GAME 2 (Fairmont State 1, WVWC 7)
In the second game of the day, Fairmont State got on the board in the third inning as
Katy Darnell scored on a sacrifice fly by Workman.
The Bobcats knotted the score at one apiece after a two-out single to center field. WVWC plated six more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the 7-1 victory in Buckhannon.
Shelby Reed went five and two-thirds in the game with two strikeouts, five runs, 12 hits, and three walks.
Fairmont State returns to the field on Sunday afternoon in Fairmont as the Falcons play Davis & Elkins in a doubleheader. Fairmont State will play as the road team at Duvall-Rosier Field with first pitch scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
