Baseball Claims Sweep over Davis & Elkins as Musgrove Collects Walk-Off in First Game

NUTTER FORT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State Baseball opened Mountain East Conference play on Friday afternoon against Davis & Elkins at Frank Loria Memorial Field. The Fighting Falcons used a walk-off single by Zachary Musgrove in the first game to earn the 5-4 victory over the Senators and the Falcons prevailed 8-2 in the second contest of the day.

GAME 1 (Fairmont State 5, D&E 4)

Musgrove singled to left field and scored Alex Tennant as Fairmont State earned the 5-4 victory in its conference opener over Davis & Elkins on Friday afternoon.

In the bottom of the second, Ryan Goff led off the inning with a single to right field and advanced on a groundout via Spencer Delawder. Justin Brown hit an RBI single to center field to give the Falcons the 1-0 lead. Jacob Goodnight followed Brown's at-bat with a double down the right-field line.

Davis & Elkins rallied to score one run in the top of the fourth, but Fairmont State answered with a run of its own after a sacrifice fly by Noah Canterbury that scored Delawder.

The Senators brought in one more run in the fifth and took the 4-3 lead off a two-run home run in the top of the sixth. Goodnight tied the score at four apiece with a solo home run shot in the bottom of sixth.

In the top of the seventh, Steven Ricketts held the Senators in check with three consecutive ground outs. Alex Tennant led off the seventh with a single to center field. Isaac Miller produced a quality sacrifice bunt to move Tennant in scoring position. Musgrove came up clutch with a single to left field as Fairmont State earned the 5-4 win on Friday afternoon.

Ricketts registered the win on the afternoon going one full inning with three groundouts. Connor Cramer collected the no-decision on the day as Cramer went six solid innings with five strikeouts, seven hits, four earned runs, and three walks.

GAME 2 (Fairmont State 8, D&E 2)

The walk-off hit via Musgrove in the first game of the day proved beneficial for the Falcons in the second game as Fairmont State downed D&E 8-2.

Goodnight led off the first inning with a single through the left side and scored on a groundout via Alex Tennant to take the 1-0 advantage.

In the second inning, Fairmont State plated four runs to take the commanding 5-0 advantage on the scoreboard. Goff doubled to left field as Tyler Haskins and Musgrove touched home plate on the play. Brown plated Goff on a sacrifice fly after a fielder's choice by PJ Lanham.

Tennant singled a few batters later to make the score, 5-0, in favor of the Falcons as Lanham came around to score.

Davis & Elkins got one run back in the top of third, but Fairmont State plated two more in the bottom of the fourth via a two-run single by Dwayne Thomas.

Goodnight homered in the sixth to put an exclamation point on his 6-8 day from the plate with two home runs and three RBIs.

Brett Whiteman collected his first win on the season going five innings in the start with six strikeouts, two earned runs, six hits, and two walks. Alex Pane and Bryan Camacho closed the door on the Senators with each pitcher registering an inning in the win.

Fairmont State (7-9, 2-0 MEC) is back on the diamond on Sunday, March 20th against West Virginia Wesleyan. First pitch from Mylan Park in Morgantown is scheduled for 1 p.m.
