Baseball Scores 34 Combined Runs in Sweep against WVWC on Sunday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Fairmont State Baseball went a perfect 4-0 on the weekend with sweeps over Davis & Elkins and West Virginia Wesleyan. The Fighting Falcons handled the Bobcats in today's doubleheader with a 19-3 win in game one and 15-9 in game two.

Fairmont State is now 9-9 on the season and 4-0 in Mountain East Conference play while WVWC falls to 0-15 on the year and 0-4 in MEC contests.

The 19 runs scored in today's first contest are the most runs for Fairmont State Baseball since February 10, 2018, when the Falcons registered 19 runs against Tuskegee. Fairmont State scored 21 runs in a doubleheader against West Virginia State on March 19, 2017. The Falcons also scored at least one run in all but one inning in which they batted in.

GAME 1 (Fairmont State 19, WVWC 3)

Fairmont State scored four runs in the bottom of the first as Zachary Musgrove sent a home run ball over the left-field fence to give the Falcons the 4-0 advantage. Musgrove's home run was the first of seven for the Falcons on the day.

Alex Tennant doubled to left-center in the second inning as Jacob Goodnight scored the fifth run for the Falcons. Tennant came around to score on a single via Noah Canterbury to take the 6-0 advantage.

Justin Brown homered in the bottom of third as Brown and Cade Sikoski touched home plate on the ball that cleared the right-center wall. 

In the bottom of the fourth, Musgrove started the inning with a triple down the right-field line. Noah Armstrong hit a sacrifice fly to score Musgrove on his next at-bat and Brown lined out to the Bobcats' center fielder to plate Haskins. Fairmont State led in the contest 11-0 through four innings.

In the fifth inning, Fairmont State registered eight runs on the board to take the 19-0 lead. Jarrod Jones pinch hit for Dwayne Thomas as Jones hit a double to right-center to score Nick Schroader. Dylan Gongola hit the third home run of the afternoon for the Falcons as he grabbed three RBIs on the play. Vince Sabatino made the score 19-0 off the fourth home run in the first game on a shot over the right-center fence.

WVWC scored three combined runs in the sixth and seventh innings to make the final score 19-3 in favor of Fairmont State.

Logan Smith took the mound for his fifth start of the season and collected his first as a starter in 2022. Smith had a quality start going six innings while allowing three hits and two runs (zero earned). Smith walked two Bobcats on the afternoon and added five strikeouts to his season totals. Smith is now 1-2 on the year.

Evan McDade pitched one inning of relief for the Falcons as he allowed two hits and one run in the contest.

GAME 2 (Fairmont State 15, WVWC 9)

Fairmont State Baseball carried over the momentum in the first contest as the Falcons added 15 runs to the scoreboard in the nightcap of the twin bill on 19 total hits. On the afternoon, Fairmont State outscored the Bobcats 34-12 with 36 combined hits.

In the second game of the day, WVWC got on the board early as the Bobcats touched home plate four times in the first inning.

The lead for the Bobcats did not last long as Fairmont State answered with six runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Dwayne Thomas homered in the first inning as he registered three RBIs in his first plate appearance of the contest. Musgrove followed with a single up the middle as Tyler Haskins belted a home run to left field to give the Falcons the 5-4 advantage. PJ Lanham continued the hit train with a single as Ryan Goff followed with a single of his own. Lanham gave Fairmont State the two-run lead on a throwing error by the Bobcats catcher.

Fairmont State plated runs in all six innings they would be on the offensive end. In the second inning, Musgrove doubled down the left-field line as Alex Tennant came around to score and made the score 7-4 in favor of the Falcons.

Noah Canterbury doubled to the right-center gap in the following inning to push the Falcon lead to 8-4. In the fourth inning, Fairmont State scored three runs as Lanham homered to center field as Haskins was plated on the play.

Wil Mullins collected the win in the second game as Mullins went four and two-thirds innings while allowing three hits, seven runs (two earned), six walks, and one strikeout on the day. Jacob Young and Ben Taylor each pitched an inning of relief as Steven Ricketts got the Falcons out of the jam in the fifth inning.

The Falcons grabbed the 15-9 victory from Mylan Park to cap a 4-0 weekend in conference play.

Fairmont State (9-9, 4-0 MEC) returns to the field for a nine-inning matchup with Clarion University on Tuesday, March 22nd. The scheduled contest is at 3 p.m. from Bridgeport.
