Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Fairmont State Softball opened Wednesday morning with a 13-5 victory over Assumption University before falling 7-5 to Tiffin University in the afternoon session. The Fighting Falcons are now 2-5 on the season.
GAME 1 (Fairmont State 13, Assumption 5 Final/5)
Fairmont State scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first as 15 batters came to the plate.
Courtney Moyer started the inning with a lead-off single and scored on an RBI single via
Emily Riggs.
Peyton Wetherholt doubled to right field with
Hannah Workman and Riggs scoring on the play.
Alexa Andrews and
Mikayla Moore hit back-to-back singles that plated two runs to take the advantage, 5-0. Wetherholt singled in the same evening that scored Riggs and Workman to have the 10-0 lead.
In the second inning, Andrews started the inning with a double down the right-field line.
Jordan Popowski reached on an error as Andrews scored on the groundout. Workman brought home
Mikayla Moore to give Fairmont State the 12-0 margin.
Assumption scored two runs in the third and three in the fourth to make the score 12-5 in favor of the Falcons. Popowski drew a walk in the bottom of the fifth to push the Falcons to a run-rule 13-5 victory as
Isabella Yelle touched home plate.
Wetherholt led the Falcons with three RBIs on the day on two hits as Workman and Riggs each contributed with two hits and two RBIs apiece. Yelle and Andrews also had two hits in the morning with four Falcons plating a run in the contest.
Shelby Reed earned the win in the pitching circle for Fairmont State as she went three and one-thirds innings pitched and allowed five runs (five earned) while striking out two Greyhounds in the contest.
GAME 2 (Fairmont State 5, Tiffin 7)
Fairmont State ended the spring break road trip with a 7-5 loss to Tiffin University on Wednesday afternoon. Riggs and
Brooke Schmitt each collected two hits in the 7-5 loss to the Dragons on Wednesday.
Hannah Workman and Riggs also contributed one RBI each to their season totals.
The Falcons got on the board in the top of the fourth inning off a
Elizabeth Waszkiewicz single that scored Schmitt from first base. Riggs sent a solo home run over the fence in the top of fifth inning to tie the score at two apiece.
Tiffin answered with two runs in the bottom half of the fifth, but Fairmont State pushed across three runs in the sixth to grab the 5-4 lead. Schmitt was plated once again as
Hannah Workman singled and moved
Courtney Moyer over to third base. Moyer scored on a pass ball by Tiffin's catcher and Workman gave the Falcons the lead on a fielding error by the Dragons third baseman.
The Dragons answered for the second straight inning as they scored three runs in the bottom half of the sixth to seize the 7-5 advantage. Tiffin's Kirstin Georges singled as the Dragons scored two on the play to grab the go-ahead runs.
Caitlyn Kassay got the start for the Falcons going five innings while allowing seven hits, four runs (four earned) and striking out four Dragons on the afternoon.
Ally Maddy took the loss as she went one full inning while allowing three runs (three earned), two walks, and one strikeout.
The Fighting Falcons return to Fairmont State for a doubleheader against Gannon University on Saturday, March 12th with the first pitch slated at 1 p.m.
