CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Fairmont State Baseball headed to the campus of the University of Charleston on Monday to take on the Golden Eagles in an afternoon doubleheader. UC both games on the day with a 3-2 extra-inning win in the first game and an 8-1 victory in the second contest.
Fairmont State is now 11-12 on the season and 6-2 in Mountain East Conference play while UC goes to 15-8 on the year and 7-1 in conference action.
GAME 1 (Fairmont State 2, UC 3)
The Falcons fell in an extra-inning affair to the Golden Eagles at the Welch Athletic Complex as UC walked off the ninth inning with a run via a hit by pitch.
Logan Smith went the distance plus one extra inning in his sixth start on the season and only allowed one earned run, four hits, and struck out five Golden Eagles in his outing. Smith lowered his season ERA to 3.55 as he took the no-decision on the mound.
Tyler Haskins got the Falcons on the board first with a solo home run in the third inning off UC's Colt Webb. The score remained in favor of Fairmont State until the bottom of the sixth as Golden Eagle Tyler Dellerman knotted the score at one apiece with a solo shot of his own.
The pitching duel went into extra innings after UC's Webb went an impressive seven innings and struck out 15 Falcons in the contest.
In the top of the eighth inning, Fairmont State threatened with two runners in scoring position after
Noah Canterbury singled to center field and stole second the following pitch. The next two Falcons struck out to end the threat in the eighth inning.
In the top of the ninth,
Noah Armstrong sent a ball over the right-field fence to give Fairmont State the one-run advantage.
Bryan Camacho came in relief of Smith but was unable to close the deal as two runs for Charleston scored in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win for the Golden Eagles. Camacho took the loss on the mound as well.
Zachary Musgrove and Armstrong each had two hits in the first game of the day with
Ryan Goff and
Cade Sikoski also notching hits in the contest.
GAME 2 (Fairmont State 1, UC 8)
In the second game of the day, the Golden Eagles scored six runs in their home half of the fifth inning as UC took the 8-1 decision to close the doubleheader.
Haskins once again got the Falcons on the board in the third inning with a two-out single that brought home Goff on the play. Fairmont State was not able to score any more runs in the contest as Charleston plated one run in the fourth inning.
UC put up six runs in the fifth inning and collected one more run in the sixth to take the contest by an 8-1 final.
Haskins led the Falcons with two hits in the contest as
Jacob Goodnight and Goff each added a hit to their season totals. Canterbury ended an 11 game on-base streak in the nightcap as well.
Wil Mullins started on the mound for Fairmont State as he pitched 4.1 innings and allowed five runs (five earned), seven hits, and two walks.
Fairmont State (11-12, 6-2 MEC) returns to the Bridgeport Recreation Complex on Saturday, April 2 for a doubleheader with Glenville State. The first pitch from Bridgeport is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
