SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- Fairmont State Softball bounced back in game two to down Notre Dame College, 4-1, after dropping game one 5-4 in Mountain East Conference action.
The Fighting Falcons are now 7-11 on the season and 3-5 in conference play. NDC is 9-13 on the campaign and 2-4 in league contests.
GAME 1 (Fairmont State 4, NDC 5)
In the first game of today's twin bill, NDC used a single by Emma Gumont in the seventh inning to register the 5-4 victory over Fairmont State.
Ashley Strauss suffered the loss in the pitching circle after going two innings while giving up five hits and one run (one earned run).
Notre Dame got on the board first with four runs in the first inning after Alexi Maciejowski hit a three-run home run to center field.
The Fighting Falcons battled back as
Peyton Wetherholt singled to the left side of the infield
Hannah Workman was able to score on the play. The Falcons trailed after three innings, 4-1.
In the fifth inning, Fairmont State was able to tie the score at four apiece as Wetherholt collected another RBI via a sacrifice fly that plated Workman once more.
Carlie Schlosser followed up Wetherholt's at-bat with a fielder's choice that scored
Katy Darnell. Emily Schweitzer evened the score at four with a sac fly of her own as
Kae Compton was able to score on the play.
The Fighting Falcons were unable to get anything going in the sixth and seventh innings as Notre Dame walked off the first contest with an RBI single via Gumont.
GAME 2 (Fairmont State 4, NDC 1)
Fairmont State earned the split on Wednesday afternoon in South Euclid as the Falcons won 4-1 behind a solid pitching performance by
Caitlyn Kassay.
Darnell produced an RBI groundout in the top of the second to give Fairmont State the one-run advantage as Liz Waszkiewicz touched home plate.
NDC evened the score at one off a ground-rule double by Maciejowski in the third but Kassay left two runners in scoring position stranded with a lineout to
Emily Riggs on Notre Dame's next at-bat.
The Fighting Falcons shifted the momentum back in their favor with a run in the fourth inning as
Courtney Moyer crossed home plate on an error by Notre Dame's shortstop.
Fairmont State added insurance runs in the top of seventh as Darnell walked to lead off the inning.
Isabella Yelle hit a ground-rule double to left field that put two Falcons in scoring position.
Torrie Gall singled to the left-center gap as Darnell and Yelle scored the third and fourth run of the game for Fairmont State.
Kassay worked around a lead-off single by Notre Dame and closed out her third complete game of the season. Kassay pitched seven innings and only allowed one run (one earned) on six hits and two walks. She also struck out four batters on the day.
On the day, Yelle and Wetherholt each chipped in hits with Wetherholt adding two RBIs to her season totals. Gall added her first RBIs of the season with two in the second contest.
The Fighting Falcons (7-11, 3-5 MEC) return to Fairmont State on Saturday afternoon as they entertain Wheeling University in a MEC doubleheader.
