FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State Softball collected two wins on the afternoon at Duvall-Rosier Field on Saturday afternoon as the Fighting Falcons are now 9-11 on the season and 5-5 in Mountain East Conference contests.

Fairmont State got off to a quick start in the first game with an 11-1 victory in five innings over Wheeling University. The Falcons extended their win streak to three games with a 6-3 decision over the Cardinals in the second game on the day.

GAME 1 (Fairmont State 11, Wheeling 1 F/5)

Courtney Moyer led the bottom of the first off with a walk for the Falcons as Hannah Workman reached base via a hit by a pitch to put two runners on the base. Emily Riggs doubled as Moyer came around to score and give Fairmont State the one-lead advantage. Katy Darnell loaded the bases with a walk and Carlie Schlosser hit an amazing RBI single to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Falcons.

Fairmont State produced two more runs in the second inning as Moyer roped a one-out double to begin the rally. Moyer stole third and scored off an RBI single via Workman. Workman stole second before Wheeling made a pitching change in the circle. Riggs singled to continue her strong pace of play and Workman scored as Riggs was caught in a pickle to end the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Falcons added two runs to make the score 6-0 from Duvall-Rosier Field. Peyton Wetherholt launched the first career home run of her collegiate career to give Fairmont State the 6-0 advantage.

Fairmont State earned the run-rule victory in the fifth inning after five runners touched home plate as the Falcons won 11-1. Brooke Schmitt collected a single to load the bases full of Falcons with one out in the inning. Alexa Andrews registered a two-RBI single that scored Schlosser and Darnell on the play. Workman closed the game for the Falcons with a bases-clearing double to give Fairmont State the 11-1 win.

Shelby Reed notched her fifth win on the season in the pitching circle for the Falcons as she went five strong innings and only allowed one run (one earned) on five hits and three walks. Reed struck out five Cardinals on the afternoon as well.

At the plate, Workman paced the Falcons with four RBIs in the first contest as Wetherholt and Andrews each drove in two runs.

GAME 2 (Fairmont State 6, Wheeling 3)

In the second game of the twin bill, Fairmont State used a four-run fifth inning to grab the 6-3 victory over Wheeling University.

The Cardinals got on the board first in the second inning as Wheeling's Mia Smallwood crossed home plate after Cardinal Autumn Oehlstrohm was thrown out at second on the play.

The Falcons answered in their home half of the second as Elizabeth Waszkiewicz plated Darnell and Isabella Yelle on a two-RBI single. After two innings, Fairmont State led 2-1 over the visiting Wheeling University.

Caitlyn Kassay registered a shut-down inning in the top of third, but Wheeling knotted the score at two apiece in the fourth with a two-out single.

The fifth inning proved vital in the second game of today's doubleheader as well as Fairmont State scored the go-ahead run via a Wetherholt double. Riggs followed Wetherholt with a two-run shot to give the Falcons the 6-2 advantage with two innings left.
