WILSON, N.C. -- Fairmont State Baseball looked to get back in the win column on Saturday afternoon, but the Fighting Falcons fell 6-5 after Bloomsburg scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth.
In the top of the ninth, the Huskies used a two-out single by Brady Gibble to secure the go-ahead run against Fairmont State.
Bloomsburg got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the top of the second and one more in the third to extend its lead to 3-0.
The Falcons answered in their home half of the fourth inning with
Zachary Musgrove leading off the inning with a triple to center field.
Dwayne Thomas singled up the middle two batters to plate Musgrove and cut the deficit to two runs. Bloomsburg added one run each in the top of the fifth and sixth innings to lead 5-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, Thomas sent a ball to left field on a 1-2 count as Fairmont State scored two runs and cut Bloomsburg's lead in half.
Fairmont State continued the middle of the game rally with
Justin Brown leading off the seventh with a single to right field.
Jacob Goodnight followed Brown's single with a single of his own and both runners advanced on an error by the shortstop.
Alex Tennant plated Brown on his at-bat with an RBI groundout to make the score 5-4.
Noah Canterbury singled to third base as Goodnight touched home plate and made the score even at five.
Bloomsburg earned the go-ahead run in the top of ninth as Gibble singled that brought home Mason Keene on the play.
The Falcons were unable to generate a run in the bottom of the inning as three straight strikeouts ended the threat.
Brett Whiteman got the start for Fairmont State going four and two-thirds pitched while allowing four runs (four earned), three walks, and six strikeouts.
Alex Pane came in relief of Whiteman going two and one-third of innings pitched with three strikeouts, two walks, and allowing one run on four hits.
Ben Taylor collected the loss on the afternoon as Taylor went one and two-thirds innings with two strikeouts and one earned run.
Bryan Camacho threw four pitches in the contest to add a strikeout to his season totals.
Thomas led the way for the Falcons as he had two hits with three runs batted in as Canterbury followed by two hits and one RBI on the day.
PJ Lanham and
Noah Armstrong added one hit apiece in the game as well.
Fairmont State returns to Historic Fleming Stadium in Wilson, N.C. as the Falcons face Bloomsburg tomorrow at 11 a.m.
