The Fighting Falcons are now 14-14 on the season and 10-8 in Mountain East Conference action.
GAME 1 (Fairmont State 9, AB 3)
Fairmont State used a four-run first inning to notch a 9-3 victory over the Battlers in the first contest on Sunday.
Emily Riggs got the Falcons on the board first with a two-RBI single to score
Hannah Workman and
Courtney Moyer.
Carlie Schlosser continued the timely hitting with a single to center field to plate Riggs and
Katy Darnell as the Falcons led 4-0 after one.
With the bases loaded, Schlosser drew a walk in the second inning of the contest to grow the Falcon lead to 6-0 as Workman touched home plate for the second time in two innings.
AB scored two runs in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to four runs, but Darnell doubled to the left-center gap in the bottom half of the inning to give the Falcons the six-run advantage at 9-3.
Shelby Reed threw her first of two complete games over the two-day period in the game as she only allowed seven hits and three runs (two earned). Reed had two strikeouts as well with 111 total pitches.
GAME 2 (Fairmont State 10, AB 7)
The Falcons took the second game on Sunday as well with the 10-7 victory over AB at Duvall-Rosier Field. Fairmont State went 4-0 against the Battlers on the season and had 46 combined runs in those four contests.
AB put up four runs in the top of the second, but the Maroon and White answered quickly with nine runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Schweitzer on her season day started the second game with a ground-rule double over the right-field fence as Fairmont State only trailed by two runs with zero outs in the second inning. Workman reached first base on a fielder's choice that brought home Ammons as the Falcons took control of the game at 5-4. The Falcons broke the game open with four more runs in the second inning as
Elizabeth Waszkiewicz had an RBI single to left field to score Darnell on the play.
The Battlers added three runs in the fourth inning to make the game interesting, but Fairmont State earned the sweep of AB with the 10-7 outcome on the Falcons' senior day.
Ally Maddy earned the win in the pitching circle for Fairmont State as she came in relief of starter
Caitlyn Kassay. Maddy pitched 3.2 innings of relief and scattered two Battler hits in her third win of the season.
4/11 GAME 1 (Fairmont State 5, NDC 2)
In the battle of the Falcons, Fairmont State prevailed in game one of Monday's doubleheader, 5-2, as the Maroon and White put up a four-spot in the fourth inning of today's first game.
Riggs opened the scoring once more in the third inning for the Fighting Falcons as she sent a ball over the right-field fence as
Peyton Wetherholt and Workman also scored on the play. Riggs, a native of Bridgeport, W.Va., now has five home runs on the season and is ninth in the MEC in total home runs.
Schweitzer added two hits to her season totals this afternoon as singled to the outfield as the Falcons scored one more run in the bottom of the third to lead NDC, 4-2.
Isabella Yelle singled to third base in the next inning to plate Workman on the play as Fairmont State led 5-2.
Reed shut down the Notre Dame bats the rest of the way as she earned her seventh win of the season with a complete-game performance (fourth of the year) as she had six strikeouts in the contest.
4/11 Game 2 (Fairmont State 3, NDC 1)
Fairmont State took the season series against NDC, 3-1, with a 3-1 victory in the nightcap of today's twinbill.
Kassay was masterful in the pitching circle as she threw a complete game as well against Notre Dame. Kassay only allowed one run on four hits and struck out four batters on the evening.
Darnell started the scoring for Fairmont State with a single to second base as
Jordan Novak scored on the throw after Alexa Andrew laid down a sacrifice bunt.
NDC knotted the score at one apiece as Falcon Alexi Maciejowski hit a ground-rule double to left-center to score Emmilee McCracken on the play.
Fairmont State would not be phased as Schlosser started the bottom of the sixth inning with an eight-pitch walk. Riggs reached first base on a throwing error by NDC's pitcher and Schlosser moved over to third base.
Kassay helped her cause in the circle with an RBI single to center field as Schlosser crossed home plate to give Fairmont State the go-ahead run at 2-1. MacKenzie Maddy added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to left field as Riggs scored on the play.
Notre Dame went in order in the top of the seventh as Fairmont State notched its 10
th victory in conference play on the day.
Fairmont State (14-14, 10-8 MEC) begins a four-game road trip on Friday afternoon as the Falcons head to Glenville State to take on the Pioneers in a doubleheader slated for 2 p.m.
