GLENVILLE, W.Va. -- Fairmont State softball started its four-game road trip at Glenville State this afternoon as the Fighting Falcons fell in the twinbill, 11-2 and 2-0.
The Falcons are now 14-16 on the season and 10-1 in Mountain East Conference play.
GAME 1 (Fairmont State 2, GSU 11 F/5)
The Pioneers scored 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth to earn the 11-2 win over Fairmont State to start the day.
Emily Riggs hit an RBI double in the first inning to give the Falcons the one-run advantage as
Hannah Workman scored on the play.
Glenville State knotted the score at one apiece with an RBI single in the bottom of the third as the two sides remained tied until the fifth inning.
In the top of the fifth,
Peyton Wetherholt led off the inning with a hit by pitch and advanced to third as Riggs hit a double once again.
Carlie Schlosser plated Wetherholt on the play with a sacrifice fly to right field as Fairmont State regained the one-run advantage. The Falcons headed to the bottom of the fifth with the one-run lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Pioneers had 11 runs cross home plate take the first game by a final score of 11-2 in five innings.
GAME 2 (Fairmont State 0, GSU 2)
The second game of the day was a pitching duel between Falcon
Caitlyn Kassay and Glenville State's Madison Thimmes.
Fairmont State was unable to get runners past second base in the second game of today's doubleheader as the Pioneers scored one run each in the third and fourth innings to collect the 2-0 victory on Doug Morris Field.
Kassay pitched six innings and only allowed three hits, and two runs (two earned) while striking out six batters on the day. Glenville's Thimmes went the distance and she allowed four hits in the shutout.
Katy Darnell, in the second game, paced the Falcons with three hits in the lead-off position as
Elizabeth Waszkiewicz notched a hit as well.
Fairmont State (14-16, 10-10 MEC) heads to Athens, W.Va. for a doubleheader with Concord University tomorrow afternoon. The first pitch from Athens is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start.
