Softball Earns Split at Concord on Saturday Afternoon

ATHENS, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State softball team wrapped up a four-game road trip this afternoon on the campus of Concord University where the Falcons took the second game of the day, 9-2, as the Mountain Lions won the first, 3-1.

Fairmont State is now 15-17 on the season and 11-11 in Mountain East Conference play while Concord has a record of 15-27 and 8-14 in conference contests.

GAME 1 (Fairmont State 1, Concord 3)

In the first game of the day, the Mountain Lions collected a 3-1 victory behind a dominant pitching by Caitlyn Bauer as she only allowed the two total hits for the Falcon hitters.

Concord got on the board first in the bottom of the first with an RBI single to left field and tacked on two more runs in the home half of the third inning to lead 3-0.

Emily Riggs registered her sixth home run of the season to cut the deficit to 3-1, but the Mountain Lions earned the 3-1 victory to start the afternoon.

Shelby Reed pitched six innings in the contest and only allowed three runs (three earned) while scattering seven hits in the game. Reed also had seven strikeouts in the pitching circle.

GAME 2 (Fairmont State 9, Concord 2)

The Falcons got the bats going in the second game of the twinbill as Fairmont State won 9-2. Caitlyn Kassay collected her fifth win in the pitching circle on the year and Ally Maddy got her first save on the season after going three innings in relief.

Riggs singled to right field to plate Hannah Workman in the first inning as the Falcons took the one-run lead to start the second contest.

In the third inning, Fairmont State opened the game up with four runs in the top half as Carlie Schlosser collected two RBIs on a single through the left side of the infield. Jordan Novak followed Schlosser's at-bat with a two-run single of her own to give the Falcons the 5-0 advantage.

Concord got within three runs as the Mountain Lions scored two runs in the fourth inning. Molly Schweitzer built the lead back to four runs as she doubled to left field to score Riggs on the play.

Fairmont State added three additional runs in the top of the sixth after Mackenzie Maddy scored on a bunt single by Hannah Workman. Elizabeth Waszkiewicz singled through the left side to plate Workman in the ensuing at-bat.

Kassay went four innings and only allowed two runs (two earned) on four hits and one walk. Kassay struck out five Mountain Lions in her outing as A. Maddy collected the save after throwing three full innings as she did not allow a hit in 10 at-bats.

Workman, Waszkiewicz, Riggs, and Schlosser all had two hits apiece in the second game of the day with Novak notching three RBIs in the contest.

Fairmont State returns for a midweek doubleheader with non-conference opponent Slippery Rock on Tuesday, April 19. The first pitch from Duvall-Rosier Field is scheduled for 3 p.m.
