Softball Takes Game Two in Wednesday Doubleheader against Frostburg State

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- On Wednesday afternoon, Fairmont State softball served as the visitors on Duvall-Rosier Field as the Fighting Falcons earned a split while taking game two by a final of 9-8.

Fairmont State is now 16-18 on the year and 12-12 in Mountain East Conference contests while Frostburg State has a record of 21-14 and 16-8 in MEC action.

GAME 1 (Fairmont State 4, Frostburg State 8)

The Bobcats used five runs in the bottom of the third inning and three runs in the fourth inning to down the Falcons 8-4 in the first game of the twinbill.

Courtney Moyer led off the contest for the Falcons with a seven-pitch walk and advanced to third on a bunt single by Hannah Workman. Emily Riggs drove in Moyer and Workman on her at-bat with a single to the center field.

Riggs added another RBI in the top of the third with a single to left field as Fairmont State led 3-0. The Bobcats answered and took the 5-3 lead after a solo home run by Jayla Hill. Frostburg State tacked three more runs in the fourth inning to hold the commanding 8-3 lead.

Fairmont State started a one-out rally in the top of the seventh as Peyton Wetherholt doubled to the left-center gap. Katy Darnell brought in Wetherholt with a single to centerfield to make the score 8-4. Carlie Schlosser continued the rally with a two-out single, but the Bobcats struck out Molly Schweitzer to earn the 8-4 win.

GAME 2 (Fairmont State 9, Frostburg State 8)

The Falcons used a five-spot of their own in the third inning as Fairmont State downed the Bobcats, 9-8, to split the season series at two games.

Frostburg State got on the board first with a two-RBI double as the Bobcats led 2-0 after two innings.

Alexa Andrews reached on a throwing error by the Bobcats' third baseman and advanced to second on the play. Moyer drove in Andrews with a single up the middle as the Falcons cut the deficit to one run. Moyer and Elizabeth Waskiewicz scored on a throwing error via Frostburg's third baseman once again as Falcons gained the 3-2 advantage. Isabella Yelle put an exclamation point on the inning for Fairmont State with a two-RBI single up the middle as the Falcons led 5-2. 

In the bottom half of the third, Frostburg State rallied with three runs to knot the score at five apiece. Hill of Frostburg State tried to score from second on a fly-ball to Katy Darnell but was thrown out at home on the play.

The Falcons regained the momentum and lead in the fourth inning as MacKenzie Maddy led the inning off with a single to center field. M. Maddy advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt via Alexa Andrews and scored on a single via Moyer. Fairmont State made the score, 7-5,  as Darnell plated Moyer with a single to right field as the timely hitting was pivotal in the contest. The Falcons tacked on two more runs as Alexis Thompson and Yelle each tallied an RBI in the inning.

Ally Maddy was able to hold Frostburg State to three runs in the final innings as Fairmont State picked up the 9-8 victory on Duvall-Rosier Field.

Yelle paced the Falcons with three RBIs and two hits as Moyer chipped in two hits and two RBIs. Darnell and Thompson added one RBI apiece in the game as well.

Maddy improved her record in the pitching circle to 3-1 as she threw 45 pitches on the afternoon.

Fairmont State softball (16-18, 12-12 MEC) heads to the campus of West Liberty University for a doubleheader with the Hilltoppers on Saturday afternoon. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the WLU Softball Complex.
