WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. -- Fairmont State softball traveled to West Liberty University today as the Fighting Falcons went 1-1 on Saturday afternoon against the Hilltoppers. The Falcons collected the second game by a final of 7-0 after falling by a score of 9-1 in the first contest.
Fairmont State is now 17-19 on the season and 13-13 in Mountain East Conference contests.
GAME 1 Fairmont State 1, WLU 9 F/6
In Saturday's first game, the Hilltoppers scored nine runs in the final five frames to collect the 9-1 victory in six innings over the Falcons.
Allie Prady had the lone run batted in for Fairmont State as she singled up the middle to plate
Katy Darnell.
Hannah Workman led the Maroon and White with two hits in the first game as Darnell and Prady each added one hit in the contest.
GAME 2 Fairmont State 7, WLU 0
Fairmont State battled back in a big way in the second game of the twinbill as the Falcons won 7-0 at WLU Softball Complex.
Caitlyn Kassay threw a complete-game shutout and struck out a season-high nine batters. Kassay matched her career-high in strikeouts from last year in a win against Walsh University on February 27, 2021.
Emily Riggs produced her team-leading seventh home run of the season to get the Falcons on the board in the second inning after a solo shot to left field.Â
The Falcons scored four runs in the third to break open the game at 5-0 as MacKenzie Maddy was brought home on an error by the Hilltopper third baseman. Darnell drew a walk to earn an RBI as Fairmont State led 3-0 and Kassay helped her own cause in the pitching circle with a two RBI single.
Alexa Andrews added insurance runs for the Falcons in the fifth inning with
Jordan Novak and Darnell scoring on a single up the middle via Andrews.
Kassay scattered four hits on the afternoon as she only surrendered one walk on her way to collecting her sixth win of the season.
Fairmont State (17-19, 13-13 MEC) returns to diamond tomorrow afternoon as the Falcons head to Wheeling, W.Va. for a doubleheader with Wheeling University (10-29, 3-21 MEC).
