Softball Drops Sunday Doubleheader at Wheeling

WHEELING, W.Va. -- Fairmont State softball finished its four-game road trip this weekend as the Fighting Falcons traveled to the campus of Wheeling University this afternoon. Fairmont State dropped both games by a final of 3-0 in the first and 4-3 in the second contest.

The Fighting Falcons are now 17-21 on the 2022 campaign and 13-15 in Mountain East Conference play.

GAME 1 Fairmont State 0, Wheeling 3

In the first game of the day, Emily Riggs produced two hits for the Falcons, but Wheeling knocked off the Maroon and White by a final of 3-0. Shelby Reed took the loss in the pitching circle for the Falcons as she threw four innings and allowed three runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks.

Wheeling scored two runs in the bottom of the first as the Cardinals held the Falcon batters in check throughout the day as Cardinal Madison Macy only allowed four hits in the contests.

Peyton Wetherholt and Brooke Schmitt followed Riggs with one hit apiece in the first game of the twinbill.

GAME 2 Fairmont State 3, Wheeling 4

In the second game, Fairmont State held the 3-2 advantage heading into the home half of the fifth, but Wheeling came from behind to secure the 4-3 victory.

The Falcons got on the board first in the third inning as Alexa Andrews led off with a triple to right field. Andrews scored as Hannah Workman reached on a fielder's choice as the Falcons led 1-0. Wheeling answered in its home half of the third with one run of its own.

Wheeling gained the one-run lead in the fourth inning with a solo home run by Autumn Oehlstrom. The Falcons battled back in the top of the fifth as Riggs produced an one-out single to begin the rally. Caitlyn Kassay hit an RBI single to right field as Riggs was able to touch home plate on the play to even the score at two apiece. Courtney Moyer regained the lead for the Falcons with a sacrifice fly to left field as Alexis Thompson scored.

In the bottom of the fifth, Wheeling scored the go-ahead run with a two RBI single via Brooke Slomkowski.

The Falcons were unable to score in the sixth and seventh as the Cardinals took both games on Sunday afternoon.

Kassay went the distance for the Falcons as she threw innings on the day while allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits and struck out three Cardinals on the day.

Fairmont State (17-21, 13-15 MEC) begins a four-game homestand on Friday afternoon as the Falcons welcome West Virginia State to Duvall-Rosier Field. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 12 p.m. on Friday, April 29.
