Softball Falls in Friday Doubleheader with West Virginia State

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State Softball welcomed the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State to Duvall-Rosier Field this afternoon as the Fighting Falcons dropped both contests. WVSU grabbed the first game by a final of 8-2 and secured the 5-1 advantage in the second matchup.

Fairmont State is now 17-23 on the season and 13-17 in Mountain East Conference play. West Virginia State collected its 20th win of the season as the Yellow Jackets are now 17-13 in conference action.

GAME 1: Fairmont State 2, WVSU 8

West Virginia State scored runs in the final four frames of the first game on Friday afternoon as the Yellow Jackets won 8-2. Ashley Strauss took the loss for the Falcons as went five full innings while striking out six batters and allowing three runs (three earned).

The Falcons scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh as Peyton Wetherholt was able to reach base via an errant throw by WVSU's third baseman. Brooke Schmitt and Mikalya Moore added one hit apiece in the contest with Abbey Ammons drawing two walks for the Falcons.

GAME 2: Fairmont State 1, WVSU 5

The Yellow Jackets secured the 5-1 decision in the second game of the day as WVSU scored one run in each of the first and fifth innings of the contest. Caitlyn Kassay was credited with the loss as she came in relief of Shelby Reed in the fifth inning as a WVSU pushed across three more in the seventh to extend its advantage.

Emily Riggs paced the Falcons in the game with two hits as Isabelle Yelle, Elizabeth Waszkiewicz, Molly Schweitzer, and Jordan Popowski all reached base via hits. Waszkiewicz also drew a walk.

Fairmont State Softball (17-23, 13-17 MEC) wraps up its regular season on Sunday as the Falcons host the University of Charleston in a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
