FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State Softball needed one win to secure third place in the Mountain East Conference North Division and the Fighting Falcons earned a 3-2 in the nightcap of today's doubleheader with the University of Charleston.
Fairmont State is now 18-24 on the 2022 campaign and 14-18 in conference contests. The Golden Eagles finished the regular season at 27-21 and 19-13 in the MEC.
GAME 1 Fairmont State 1, UC 4
UC got on the board first with a two-out double to left field as the Golden Eagles led 1-0.
The Falcons knotted the score at one apiece as
Peyton Wetherholt reached base via a throwing error and advanced to second to lead off the fourth inning.
Emily Riggs placed a solid bunt as she reached first and Wetherholt moved to third base. Wetherholt then scored on a throwing error via Charleston's catcher to make the game tied at one.
UC retook the one-run lead after Hannah Rose led the inning off with a single up the middle. Rose Scored two batters off a single to the outfield. Charleston added one run in each of the sixth and seventh innings to take the first game by a final of 4-1.
Shelby Reed threw well as she scattered 11 hits, four runs (four earned), and one walk through 6.1 innings pitched. Reed tallied three strikeouts in the outing.
GAME 2 Fairmont State 3, UC 2
In the final home game, the Fighting Falcons answered the call with a 3-2 victory to secure third place in MEC North and head to Salem, Va. with momentum.
Caitlyn Kassay started in the circle as she went five full innings and only allowed two runs (one earned) on eight hits. Kassay is now 7-11 on the season as
Ashley Strauss came in relief in the sixth inning to shut the door on Charleston and earned the save as well.
UC put up one run in the top of the second, but Kassay was able to work around the jam and limit the damage. Fairmont State answered in the home half of the inning with two runs as
Courtney Moyer came up clutch with a two-RBI single up the middle to plate
Elizabeth Waszkiewicz and
Isabella Yelle.
The Falcons tacked on a run in the fifth inning as Moyer led off with a single to center field. Wetherholt produced a quality groundout as Moyer was able to come home on the play to give Fairmont State the 3-1 advantage.
The Golden Eagles scored once in the sixth, but Strauss was able to get out of the late-inning jam with two strikeouts. Strauss got UC to go down in order in the seventh with three groundouts.
Moyer led the charge for the Falcons with two hits and two RBIs as
Alexa Andrews and Yelle had the other two hits in the lineup.
Fairmont State (18-24, 14-18 MEC) will now head to Salem, Va. for the eight-team tournament starting on Friday, May 6.
