FROSTBURG, Md. -- The Fairmont State baseball team needed one win today to secure the Mountain East Conference North Division Title at Frostburg State this afternoon, but the Bobcats collected both games. Frostburg won the first game by a final of 7-4 and took the second contest in 10 innings by a final of 9-6.
The Fighting Falcons will now head to the MEC Conference Tournament as the No. 2 seed from the north division and will face Concord University at 7 p.m. on Thursday night at Linda K. Epling Stadium.
Fairmont State finishes the regular season with a record of 27-20 and 22-10 in conference play with the 27 wins the most in program history since the 2017 season when the Falcons won 29 total games.
Frostburg State will head to Beckley on Thursday as the No. 1 seed from the north and will face Glenville State on Thursday afternoon.
GAME 1 Fairmont State 4, Frostburg State 7
The Falcons held a three-run margin through two innings, but Frostburg rallied in the latter stages of the contest to win 7-4.
Logan Smith went three innings in the start as he collected three strikeouts and only surrendered one run.
Steven Ricketts took the loss in relief as he pitched two and one-thirds innings while allowing five runs on six hits.
Evan McDade finished the game on the mound for the Falcons going two-thirds of an inning and allowing a run to come across.
PJ Lanham led off the second inning with a single to left field and advanced to second via a hit by pitch by
Ryan Goff.
Justin Brown singled home Lanham with a hit to center field and Goff advanced into scoring position.
Tyler Haskins followed with a double to right field plating Brown and Goff as Fairmont State led 3-0.
In the bottom of the third, the Bobcats scratched across one run to cut the deficit to 3-1, but Smith was able to hold the Bobcats to only one run in his start.
Frostburg State took the lead in the fourth inning with four runs crossing the plate, but the Falcons looked to rally in the top of the fifth.
Jacob Goodnight led off the fifth with a double and advanced to third on a throwing error. Goodnight scored on a double by
Zachary Musgrove to make the score 5-4 in favor of Frostburg.
The Bobcats were able to limit the Falcons to only one run in the fifth and defeated Fairmont State by a final of 7-4.
GAME 2 Fairmont State 6, Frostburg State 9 F/10
In the final game of the four-game series, the Bobcats walked off the series with a three-run home run via Nick Trey in the bottom of the tenth.
The Falcons battled from an early four-run deficit as Goodnight tripled and scored himself in the top of the fifth to knot the score at five-all.
Lanham gave Fairmont State the lead in the fifth with a RBI triple that scored Musgrove. The Bobcats answered with one run in the bottom of the sixth and took the series finale by a final of 9-6 in the 10
th inning with a walk-off three-run homer.
Noah Armstrong, in his first pitching appearance of the season, suffered the loss as the left-handed pitcher went one and two-thirds innings pitched as he allowed three runs on four hits and struck out one batter.
Ben Taylor came out of the bullpen prior to Armstrong and struck out five Bobcats in 2.2 innings of relief work.
Alex Seymour also worked an inning of relief for Fairmont State as he held the lead, at the time, for the Falcons with a clean inning.
Fairmont State (27-20, 22-10 MEC) will look to build off a successful regular season as the Falcons will face the Mountain Lions of Concord at 7 p.m. on Thursday night at Epling Stadium. If you are unable to make it to Beckley, you can watch the stream on mountaineast.tv
