Fairmont State Fights to 0-0 Tie in Season Opener

Defensive Battle ends in a 0-0 Tie

Fairmont, W. Va. -- The Fairmont State University Women's Soccer team faced off with Slippery Rock University at James Egli Field during their first official contest of the season. New this season, the NCAA announced the rule of no overtime during the regular season. After 90 minutes of play, the game ended in a scoreless tie. The 0-0 outcome was the first time SRU had a scoreless season opener on their home field since 2014.

Two defensive units went to battle for the entirety of the match. FSU's senior goalkeeper, Taylor Kennedy, made six saves on the day, while Slippery Rock's goalkeeper, Emma Yoder, was forced to make five saves during the match.

On the offensive end, junior forward, Kiera Kuzinski, and freshman forward, Alejandra Puerto, both tallied three shots each. One of the key chances in the match was in the 33rd minute by sophomore midfielder, Alyssa Weaver, off a cross from Kuzinski.

The Falcons were battle tested again in the second half. With just a few minutes left in the match, senior midfielder, Mackenzie Gillespie slotted a ball through to Kuzinski on the right flank. Kuzinski's shot went just wide of the back post.

The next contest for the Falcons will be on the road when they take on Wheeling University on Wednesday, September 7th for their first Mountain East Conference match of the season.
