Behr Nets Penalty Kick Goal on Senior Day

West Virginia State secured a 2-1 win on Sunday afternoon.

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Senior Ava Behr scored her second penalty kick goal of the season on Senior Day as the Fairmont State (3-5-1, 2-4 Mountain East Conference) women's soccer team could not find the equalizer and fell versus West Virginia State (5-3-1, 5-1-1 MEC) on Sunday (Oct. 1) afternoon at Duvall-Rosier Field.

Before the game, the women's soccer team recognized four seniors (Behr, Kiera Kuzinski, Riley Miara and Gracie Smith) for their dedication to Fairmont State women's soccer.

The Falcons outshot the Yellow Jackets 17-4 and had one more shot on goal than WVSU. Fairmont State had 11 corner kick opportunities and held the Yellow Jackets to zero corners.

Alejandra Puerto aimed a shot on target in the fifth minute, which was saved by Renata Castellanos. WVSU broke the scoreless tie in the 33rd minute when Alba Closa directed a pass off the foot of Yasmin Evans, who kicked the ball into the back of the net for the first goal of the game. West Virginia State led 1-0 at the half.

The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 2-0 when Dhiramo Esther converted a penalty kick goal. Fairmont State responded when Isabella Maldonado drew a foul in the box that led to the penalty kick goal by Behr in the 65th minute. Kuzinski and Puerto fired a pair of shots on goal for the Falcons down the final stretch. WVSU managed to keep the Falcons off the scoreboard in the final 25 minutes and claimed a 2-1 road conference win.

The Fairmont State women's soccer team will conclude its homestand on Wednesday (Oct. 4) versus West Virginia Wesleyan. The Falcons and Bobcats will square off at 7 p.m. from Duvall-Rosier Field.
