Baldino Scores First Collegiate Goal in 3-2 Loss Versus Nationally-Ranked Charleston

Alejandra Puerto scored in her third-consecutive game while Isabella Maldonado tallied two assists.

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Gianna Baldino netted her first collegiate goal and Isabella Maldonado registered a pair of assists but the Fairmont State (4-7-1, 3-6 Mountain East Conference) women's soccer team narrowly fell at home to No. 14 Charleston (10-0-2, 9-0-1 MEC) 3-2 at Duvall-Rosier Field on Wednesday (Oct. 11) night.

The Golden Eagles outshot Fairmont State 12-9 and had one more shot on goal than the Falcons. Both teams had seven corner kicks apiece. Olivia Johnston and Jordan Maynard each made four saves.

Alejandra Puerto fired a shot on goal in the eighth minute that was saved by Maynard. After Johnston made her first save of the night in the 10th minute, Charleston scored the game's first goal in the 11th minute when Angela Gatto slipped one into the back of the net for her second goal of the season. Puerto secured the equalizer in the 27th minute when Maldonado lofted a pass over the UC defense and found Puerto, who finished with the goal. Puerto has scored three goals in as many games. Johnston made a pair of saves to keep the game tied in the 31st and 32nd minutes. Puerto fired an additional shot on goal in the 38th minute and Tristen Bright recorded a shot on goal in the 40th minute. After 45 minutes of play, the game remained tied at 1-1.

On Charleston's first corner kick opportunity, Lina Jaime curled the kick in from the spot into the back of the net to put Charleston back in the lead in the 48th minute. Fairmont State once again evened the score when Maldonado delivered a pass to Baldino off the corner kick for her first collegiate goal. The Golden Eagles pulled back in front when Juliette Lucas dished a pass off to Jaime, who scored her second goal of the night. Tegan Wheeler fired a shot on goal in the 66th minute, which was fended off by Maynard. The Golden Eagles held Fairmont State scoreless the remainder of the game and earned a 3-2 road conference win.

The Fairmont State women's soccer team hits the road on Saturday (Oct. 14) for a game at Davis & Elkins at 1 p.m.
