Isabella Maldonado delivered the game-winning goal with 10 seconds left on the clock to push the Fairmont State (5-7-2, 4-6-1 Mountain East Conference) women's soccer team to a road win over West Liberty (5-6-3, 4-5-2 MEC) on Wednesday (Oct. 18) night at West Family Complex in West Liberty, W.Va.
Fairmont State outshot West Liberty 25-12 and recorded 13 shots on goal compared to the Hilltoppers' nine shots on target.
Olivia Johnston corralled three saves each half and finished with six saves. The Falcons finished with six corner kick opportunities and held WLU to three.
West Liberty broke open the scoring in the 24th minute when Maya Taggart scored an unassisted goal that put the Hilltoppers ahead. Puerto evened the score at 1-1 when Maldonado assisted Puerto on her fifth goal of the season. The Falcons and Hilltoppers were tied after the first 45 minutes of play.
Puerto struck again within the first 10 minutes of the second half and fired her second goal of the game to put the Falcons in the lead.
Serenity Thomas picked up an assist on the goal. The sophomore from Honduras recorded her third multi-goal game in a Fairmont State uniform. The 'Toppers answered with a penalty kick goal in the 58th minute to level the score, 2-2.
Tristen Bright scored her second goal of the season less than two minutes later to pull the Falcons back in front, 3-2. West Liberty's Isabella Aperfine led Mia Zecca for a goal and the Hilltoppers once again evened the score. The game remained tied until the final minute of play when Puerto centered a pass inside the 18. Maldonado retrieved Puerto's pass, juked a defender and fired the ball into the top left corner of the net with 10 seconds to go to put the Falcons back in front. The Falcons earned three points and a win versus an MEC North team.
With the win, the Falcons increased their point total to 13 and trail WLU by one point in the conference standings for third place in the MEC North. Frostburg State leads the division with 28 points while Notre Dame (Ohio) has 19 points. Wheeling trails Fairmont State and has eight points.
The Falcons and Cardinals will play the final leg of the regular season series on Sunday (Oct. 22) at Duvall-Rosier Field at 1 p.m.
