DeAngelo Scores 26 in Fairmont State's Season-Opening Win

The senior from Jefferson Hills, Pa. drained five three-point field goals in the team's win.

GREENSBURG, Pa. -- Alyssa DeAngelo led all scorers with 26 points while Katy Darnell, Jalen Gibbs and Leslie Huffman all finished in double figures as the Fairmont State (1-0) women's basketball team began the season with a 79-66 win over Lock Haven (0-1) at the Atlantic Region Crossover in Greensburg, Pa.

DeAngelo shot 7-for-12 from the field and converted five three-point buckets to go along with five rebounds, four assists and a steal. Darnell, who scored her 1,000th career point with her first bucket of the game, shot 5-for-6 and pumped in 15 points. Gibbs and Leslie Huffman both finished with 10 points and nine rebounds apiece. Madeline Huffman added nine points and a trio of assists.

As a team, the Falcons shot 53.1 percent from the field and 45 percent from downtown, making nine of 20 three-point attempts. Fairmont State capitalized on LHU turnovers with 25 points off turnovers and chipped in 14 second chance points from eight offensive boards.

Darnell registered her 1,000th career point at the 8:43 mark in the first quarter that was assisted by Madeline Huffman. Madeline Huffman drained the first triple of the game with 8:09 in the quarter and the Falcons led 6-2. DeAngelo extended the Falcons' lead to 14-6 with a layup with 3:41 remaining in the opening quarter and Leslie Huffman cashed in a three-point basket that gave FSU a 17-6 advantage early. Zaniya Murray chipped in a steal and score as time expired in the first quarter with Fairmont State leading 25-15. A layup by Gibbs and a three-point basket by Bre Wilson pushed the Fairmont State lead to 30-15 at the start of the second quarter. DeAngelo knocked down consecutive three-pointers that kept the Falcons' lead in double digits at 36-19. The senior guard swished her third triple of the second quarter with 3:23 remaining and the Falcons held a 39-24 lead late in the first half. Gibbs finished a layup before the clock ran out in the first half and Fairmont State led 42-27 after one half of play.

Lock Haven made adjustments and trimmed the Fairmont State advantage to nine points following a 6-0 scoring run to start the second half. The Falcons answered after Gibbs made a layup and Leslie Huffman circled home a three-pointer to put the Falcons back in front by double digits. Darnell scored six-straight points herself and increased the FSU lead to 53-38. Fairmont State led 54-42 at the end of the third quarter. Fairmont State's lead grew to 19 points in the fourth quarter when Madeline Huffman scored a fastbreak layup with 8:18 to go. The Bald Eagles rallied and cut the Falcons' lead to just seven points with 2:29 left in the fourth quarter. DeAngelo's fifth three-point basket fo the game and a pair of free throws pulled FSU back ahead by 12 points with less than 90 seconds left in the game. Fairmont State secured its first win of the season with a 79-66 victory of LHU.

The Falcons will conclude play at the Atlantic Region Crossover tomorrow (Nov. 11) with a contest versus Seton Hill at 6 p.m.
