FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State (2-0) men's basketball team cruised to an 85-64 win over Edinboro (0-2) on Saturday (Nov. 11) night inside Joe Retton Arena in Fairmont, W.Va. Four Fairmont State players registered double-digit point totals, with
Tyheil Peterson leading the charge with 15 points.
Peterson shot 3-for-7 from the field and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe.
Tommy Williams and
David Jolinder both turned in 14 points while
Cameron Whiteside added 13.
Callum Crossman protected the rim and finished with four blocks in his second collegiate game.
Zyon Dobbs secured a team-high nine rebounds and added six points.
After the score was tied 7-7, Peterson put Fairmont State in the lead by completing a three-point play. Crossman earned a three-point play of his own on an offensive rebound that put FSU up by six points with 12:24 on the clock in the first half. Fairmont State scored nine unanswered points, which ended with a Williams fast break layup and the Falcons led 26-14 at the 8:33 mark. A Dobbs jumper and a Williams floater pushed Fairmont State's advantage to 30-16 with under seven minutes remaining in the opening half.
Colin Comer knocked down a three-pointer that was assisted by Whiteside and Whiteside drove to the basket on a fastbreak layup to give Fairmont State an 18-point cushion late in the first half. Whiteside chipped in another layup on an assist from Jolinder and the Falcons maintained an 18 point lead after the first 20 minutes.
The Falcons began the second half by scoring the first five points on a Seth younkin layup and a Williams triple to go up 23 points. A Whiteside three-point bucket and a made jump shot by Dobbs pushed the Falcons to a 57-31 lead with 16:14 on the clock. Crossman slammed home a dunk on a pass by
Jaidyn West and
Adam Deininger drilled a three-pointer that gave the Falcons a commanding 28-point lead. Edinboro would not come closer than 18 points of the Falcons' lead down the stretch.
Baran Aslan poked a steal and finished at the other end with a bucket and a foul to wrap a bow on the dominant Fairmont State win.
The Fairmont State men's basketball team will hit the road to West Chester, Pa. for its first road game of the season at West Chester on Wednesday (Nov. 15) at 6 p.m.
