CALIFORNIA, PA – The Fairmont State women's basketball team (8-1 overall, 5-0 Mountain East Conference) fell in a close battle with the Vulcans of California (PA) (7-1, 2-0) in a 72-68 score line.
Alyssa DeAngelo claimed 20 points, knocking down 4-7 attempts from beyond the arc.
Katy Darnell had 15 points, and Gibbs had 12 to go along with 6 rebounds.
The Falcons were first on the scoreboard when
Leslie Huffman drilled a three. Darnell and DeAngelo helped their team with first quarter buckets to go ahead of Cal U by six with 7:42 to play. A layup from DeAngelo pushed FSU's lead to 13-6.
Bre Wilson capitalized on a jumper with 2:26 to go in the opening quarter. To open the second quarter,
Madeline Huffman notched a triple to push her side ahead. Gibbs and DeAngelo also added buckets to the Fairmont 10-point lead. DeAngelo again swished a three and a jumper to push the lead for the Falcons.
Aaliyah Brunny nailed a shot from behind the arc with less than two minutes to go. FSU was up by as many as 16 in the opening half of action with a score of 37-21.
The Vulcans came out strong offensively, claiming four unanswered buckets. Gibbs and DeAngelo managed buckets, while Darnell,
Leslie Huffman, and Wilson all added free throws. The score after the third quarter was 48-43, with FSU still in the lead. A layup by Darnell and Gibbs helped the Falcons to hold their edge. Cal U pulled ahead by two with 7:13 to play. DeAngelo swished a three pointer to keep the Vulcans lead within a two-point distance. Darnell and Gibbs again added a couple of points apiece. With 1:39 to go, Cal still held their lead by four points. Free throws from DeAngelo and a jumper from Darnell would attempt to pull the lead back but it wasn't enough as the Vulcans swished two free throws to win 72-68.
